The programs and concerts by the SJMO are made possible through generous support of jazz fans and organizations... In 1990 the U.S. Congress, recognizing the importance of jazz in American culture, authorized the establishment of the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra (SJMO) as the orchestra-in-residence at the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History... As the nation's history museum, we challenge ourselves to become the country's most accessible, inclusive, relevant, and sustainable public history institution.
