Waikato Museum Te Whare Taonga O Waikato is an integral part of Hamilton City Council's Venues, Tourism, and Events group. Our group plays a pivotal role in promoting Kirikiriroa Hamilton as a must-visit destination, working to fill the city with events and attractions... Hamilton Zoo at Te Kaaroro Nature Precinct offers a gateway to unforgettable wildlife encounters. As the North Island's largest zoo, our 25-hectare haven plays host to 480 exotic and native creatures, from majestic tigers and inquisitive chimpanzees to colourful parrots and vibrant frogs. Our core mission is to unite the community with the wonders of the natural world... Waikato Museum in its current building was opened in 1987. The architect was the late Ivan Mercep of JASMaD (now Jasmax), the same architect who went on to design New Zealand's national museum, Te Papa. Mercep was awarded a prestigious Gold Medal by the Institute of Architects (June 2008) for his notable career.
