Dr. Arifur Rahman Khan

Born in Narayangonj, Bangladesh, in 1973. He received his B.Sc and M.Sc degrees from the department of Applied Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, University of Dhaka, Bangladesh in 1996 and 1998, respectively. From 1999 to 2004, he was lecturer at the Ahasanullah University of Science and Technology (AUST) and Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB). In 2004, he started his PhD as Monbukagakhusho: MEXT student and received doctoral degree in 2008 from the department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering of Kyushu Institute of Technology. He had been a postdoctoral researcher from 2008 to 2013 with the Laboratory of Spacecraft Environment Interaction Engineering (LaSEINE) of Kyushu Institute of Technology. Since December 2013, he has been promoted to Assistant Professor of LaSEINE. After forming the BIRDS project and running successfully, from April 1, 2016, he has been hired by University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) as Assistant professor to develop a small satellite facilities, similar to Kyutech, funded by NASA. Although Dr. Khan (arkhan@utep.edu) is physically no more with the BIRDS project, he is always with us as a starting member. His research interests are ESD on solar cells, material degradation in space environments, plasma interactions, charge transportation, EMC, ground testing of small satellite, and development of novel space grade materials.

George Maeda

He graduated from the University of Maryland in 1981, with a BS degree in electrical engineering. He then received a master's degree in the same field from Cornell University in 1982. He went to work for AT&T Bell Laboratories from 1982 to 1989 designing hardware and software for long-haul, near gigabit-per-sec, optical fiber repeaters. Next he backpacked all over the world for three years. He worked at Panasonic (in Japan) on telecom projects from 1992 to 2004 as a quality control engineer; at Panasonic he mastered the Japanese language. From 2005 to 2015, George Maeda installed real time fluxgate (MAGDAS) magnetometers all over the world for ICSWSE (Int'l Center for Space Weather Science and Education) at Kyushu University; MAGDAS is regarded as the world's largest array of magnetometers, with 72 units. In July of 2015, he began working at Kyutech in the LaSEINE laboratory of Prof. Mengu Cho. Recently he joined UNISEC as it is closely related to his current work concerning nano satellites and their use to train young people in space-related engineering fields.

My role in the BIRDS Project: I am currently playing the role of Project Manager of the BIRD project. My role is to coordinate the project development stages, organize team members to play important roles throughout the lifecycle of the project based on the project integrated management plan and motivate team members to achieve assigned task. I also try to adapt myself to changing demand of the project and the team members as this is a cross boarder multidisciplinary project. I also do the important role of keeping a watch on schedule.
