HUMAN RESOURCES - Key Persons

A Pace

A Pace internship took Dwyer in this career direction. Although she was not aware of the workings of local government, as she was approaching graduation, the faculty encouraged her to enter the newly established public administration program in order to develop her talents and further her career in municipal government. Through a graduate assistantship, she could afford to continue her studies. Also as part of that assistantship, Dwyer interned with the manager鶹ýs office of the town of Croton-on-Hudson. There she became fascinated with the operations of municipal government. 鶹ýThat was a turning point,鶹ý she acknowledged. She clearly had found her passion because she was hired, even before graduating, as the village manager of Walden, NY in Orange County. She completed the master鶹ýs degree in 1987 while working full-time. At 23, Dwyer was the youngest person ever in the nation to hold an appointed municipal manager鶹ýs position, and a position rarely given to women to boot. 鶹ýI give Pace all the credit for my training and confidence. Pace has always supported my career and credentials,鶹ý she underscores. She even returned to Pace for a second masters in accounting, completed in 1997, when she found she was increasingly dealing with municipal budget and finance in her work.

Edward J. Mortola

Edward Joseph Mortola came to Pace Institute in 1947 as assistant dean. Holding increasingly important leadership positions, over the next 43 years he provided visionary leadership, dramatically increased enrollment, and expanded the University鶹ýs academic programs. During Mortola's tenure the Undergraduate School of Business Administration (1965), the Schools of Arts and Sciences (1965), as well as the schools of education (1965), nursing (1966), law (1976), and Computer Science and Information Systems (1983) were established. He also increased the reach of Pace鶹ýs landscape of learning by establishing new campuses in Westchester County: Pleasantville in 1963, White Plains in 1975, and Briarcliff in 1978. In 1969, a $20 million campus building complex (One Pace Plaza) was completed on the site of Pace鶹ýs first location on Park Row in lower Manhattan, across the street from City Hall. A midtown center opened in 1976 to serve corporations and business professionals. Under Mortola鶹ýs direction, Pace achieved University status in 1973. Mortola served as president of Pace from 1960 until 1984, when, upon reaching his 70th birthday, he was appointed to the newly created position of chancellor and his responsibilities as president were transferred to William G. Sharwell. Mortola served as the University's chancellor until February 1987. When asked in 1986 how he wished to be remembered, Dr. Mortola replied: "When I look down the road traveled and the road ahead, I suppose that, most importantly, I would like to be remembered as someone who cared, someone who felt that he had many friends at Pace, someone who spent his life on behalf of this institution and felt that every moment of it was worthwhile." After a long illness, Edward J. Mortola died on October 22, 2002. He was 85. At the time of his death, Mortola was a member of the University's board of trustees and held the title of Chancellor Emeritus.

José Luis Castro

José Luis Castro was always curious about the world, which placed him at odds with the political climate he grew up in. Born in Camagüey, a rural province of eastern Cuba, the country had long become increasingly censored and oppressed. 鶹ýI used to eavesdrop on the grown-ups,鶹ý he said. 鶹ýThey鶹ýd talk about the Camp David Accords, Central American revolutions, the Cold War.鶹ý Whenever he could, he would listen to Voice of America on the radio. It would have been impossible for José, at that age, to imagine he would one day be the head of two international health organizations, travelling the world for work. To get there, José鶹ýs path would take him from a small school house in rural Cuba to political exile in the United States. Along the way, it would bring him to 鶹ý. Now, José Luis Castro is leading the Pace Center for Global Health and proud to be a Dyson Advisory Board Member, reflecting on how he got here and how Pace helped shape his career. 鶹ýIf I had not been [on Pace's Model United Nations team], I would not be where I am today.鶹ý At an early age, José鶹ýs mother taught him to read and write. As a result, he began his formal education ahead of the six other students in his schoolhouse. José was too young to grasp the societal gaps that held those students back and allowed him to flourish. Unlike many Cubans, the Castro home had long been a cultural focal point. José鶹ýs grandfather was an influential man who attracted artists and intellectuals as visitors from around the world, exposing José to new ideas.

Julie Casella-Esposito - SVP

Job Titles:
  • Senior Vice President
Julie Casella-Esposito鶹ýs career in Human Resources (HR) grew as the field itself was evolving. Originally known as 鶹ýpersonnel,鶹ý the profession had begun to develop and diverge from industrial psychology. Casella-Esposito recognized in the fledgling field an intersection of her interest in psychology and her early work experience in finance and business. 鶹ýAs I became more involved at work, I could see how powerful it could be to bring the two fields together.鶹ý Growing up in Manhattan, where she still lives, Casella-Esposito was in the first generation of her Italian immigrant family to attend college. She was a strong student who figured out solid study habits, such as being well-prepared, doing all the readings and attending class regularly, all by herself while in high school. Nevertheless, she credits her mother with teaching her and her three siblings that education was critical to success and the key to advancement. 鶹ýBoth my parents felt that the most important investment they could make in us was in our education. My mom pushed us all; she always said we should make a million mistakes and learn from them. Mistakes are not failures, and failure was not an option.鶹ý

Patricia Dwyer

Then there鶹ýs New York. Dwyer is a city girl through and through, whether it is a chocolate tasting or a travel show at the Javits Center, a Mets game or a Broadway show, the bustle, lights and noise of her hometown city are in her veins. 鶹ýI鶹ýve never vacationed on an island other than Manhattan. I know people love the Caribbean, but I love the crowds, the lights, the noise; everything big and bright.鶹ý She鶹ýd love to get back to the 鶹ýstunningly beautiful鶹ý Southwest, but even in Taos or Southern Colorado, she feels bored without some city-style energy. 鶹ýI don鶹ýt go there to meditate or do yoga.鶹ý

Robert Scott Pace

Job Titles:
  • President of Pace Institute
Robert Scott Pace was appointed president of Pace Institute in 1942, following the death of his father, Homer S Pace. Robert Pace served in the armed forces but returned in 1945 to see the school through a hectic post-World War II period, which saw the institution mature physically and intellectually and become accepted into the ranks of colleges and universities. During Pace鶹ýs tenure, from 1942 to 1960, Pace Institute became Pace College; New York State approved the BBA and BA degrees; Pace moved from a few rented floors at 225 Broadway to its own 16-story building at 41 Park Row; and the Graduate Division was established. Widely recognized for the strength of its business education, even the Ivy League offered praise when a Princeton faculty member wrote, 鶹ýIt is accepted here at Princeton that your training program is superior to those offered at the Wharton School, Temple University, and Rutgers University.鶹ý Robert Pace nominated Edward J. Mortola, who was then vice president at Pace, to be the college's third President. Robert Pace was fully convinced that his designated successor was the right person to shepherd Pace鶹ýs plans. Robert Pace retired from the presidency in 1960 and shortly thereafter Edward J. Mortola became President of Pace College. On November 19, 1989, after having been retired for 29 years, Robert Pace died of respiratory failure at King's Row Adult Residence in Middletown, New Jersey. He was 85 years old.
