SHOGIVANCOUVER

Shogi is Japan's version of chess. Shogi is unique among national chess variants in that captured pieces can be brought back into play under the captor's control - the "drop rule". The board size in shogi (9×9 squares) is larger than in Western chess (8×8), some of the pieces are different (e.g. gold generals, silver generals, etc.), and most of the pieces can be promoted to become stronger (e.g. a rook becomes a dragon king)... Originally founded in 1968 by Mr. Makoto KUMANO (熊野理さん), the Vancouver Shogi Club was the first shogi club outside of Japan to be officially recognized by the Japan Shogi Association. Matches were played at a location on Hastings Street... Under new management, the club was re-launched again in 2014. We hope to introduce shogi to a broader audience here in Vancouver.
