Ardan led the development of the EMPIAR public archive for raw EM image data, and since May 2017 has been Team Leader for Cellular Structure and 3D Bioimaging. Ardan joined EMBL-EBI in 2011 to manage the electron microscopy (EM) project and the EMDB archive for 3D EM structures, then to coordinate cellular structure and 3D bioimaging activities in the PDBe team. Before coming to EMBL-EBI he studied 3D structure at the small (cells and flouorescence microscopy) and even smaller (macromolecules and single particle cryo electron microscopy) scales at Imperial College in London. Ardan holds a Masters degree in Engineering Physics, and a PhD from the Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden involving the development of multi-colour confocal microscopy systems.

Cath joined EMBL-EBI in 2002 to develop the outreach programme, and extended her responsibilities to include training in 2006. Her team now coordinates a wide-ranging portfolio of training activities reaching tens of thousands of individuals each year. She contributes to a number of collaborative projects.
She is co-chair of the Education Committee for the International Society of Computational Biology (ISCB) and a member of the advisory board for the Crick African Network. Before joining EMBL-EBI, Cath spent a decade as an editor of scientific review journals, cutting her teeth with the Elsevier Trends Journals before launching Nature Reviews Cancer. Prior to that, a brief dalliance with medicine at the University of Oxford led her to seek solace in molecules in Cambridge, where she completed her PhD in biochemistry under the guidance of Robin Irvine.

Dr Effie Mutasa-Gottgens is Senior Scientific Officer in the Industry Partnerships Team with responsibility for delivering the EMBL-EBI Industry Programme and collaborating on developing strategy, with particular focus on agriculture and food.

Emily joined the Training team in February 2020 as an Event and Marketing Officer working closely with the EMBL-EBI Industry team on a variety of programme member workshops and marketing projects.
In 2008, Emily graduated with a 1st Class Ba (Hons) in Photography from the University for the Creative Arts in Kent. She was introduced to the events sector while working as a receptionist in the UK and for a short time abroad in New Zealand.
In 2010 Emily joined the orthopaedic device company DePuy Synthes, owned by Johnson & Johnson Ltd. Here she spent 10 successful years based in Hertfordshire, as an Event Co-ordinator in a small team seconded to the AO Foundation; a not-for-profit global network dedicated to the education and research of surgical treatment of trauma and musculoskeletal disorders. The role included managing local logistics and marketing for a number of surgical training courses around the UK and Ireland.

Lucie Smith joined EMBL-EBI in 2015 initially in the Strategic Project Management Office before joining the Training team with specific focus on Industry workshops and events.
Having run her own international event management company for over 20 years, Lucie has expertise in the creation and management of a wide variety of business events worldwide.
Providing professional event management across all sectors including pharma, technology, and finance worldwide. Lucie has specific knowledge around cross-cultural events, networking, online registration, external speaker liaison, and travel management.

Dr Rob Finn leads EMBL-EBI's Microbiome Informatics team, which is responsible for the MGnify resource, which provides access to the metagenomics, metatranscriptomics and assembly analysis services. The functional and taxonomic profiles of these datasets, once made public, can be access by all via the MGnify website. The team is also responsible for the HMMER website, which enables fast proteins sequence similarity searches against a range of sequence and profile HMM databases. Rob also has a small research group that probes the functions of microbial 'dark matter'.
Rob joined EMBL-EBI from the Janelia Research Campus in the US, where he led a group that designed fast, web-based, interactive protein-sequence searches and annotations. Between 2001 and 2010, he was the project leader for Pfam at the Wellcome Sanger Institute in the UK. Rob's academic background is in microbiology and he holds a PhD in biochemistry from Imperial College, London.
