HEAL

The HEAL Group studies a range of issues focused on the interface of health and livelihoods in Sub-Saharan Africa utilizing a One Health approach. We combine approaches from the biological and social sciences to understand the determinants of health and their relationships with livelihoods. Our goal is to understand the health constraints of both animals and people, and to use this information to improve livelihoods through effective interventions... The group is coordinated from the College of Veterinary Medicine, North Carolina State University (NCSU), with research and programmatic activities conducted in Sub-Saharan Africa. The majority of the HEAL group activities are based in Ethiopia. Ethiopia is challenged by a range of health issues affecting both humans and animals which impact the livelihoods of millions of people. The human population of Ethiopia is 89.4 million (World Bank, 2011), with 82 percent of the population living in rural areas (World Bank, 2011). Additional data..
