Professor Fanny A. Ramirez (Ph.D. Rutgers University) holds a joint appointment with the Manship School of Mass Communication and LSU's interdisciplinary Center for Computation and Technology. Her research examines the role of digital media in criminal justice and sexual violence contexts with an eye toward issues of social justice, privacy, surveillance, and race and gender bias.
In her role as Assistant Director of the SMAC lab, Professor Ramirez has worked with students on various projects at the intersection of social media, political communication, and violence against women. Recent projects include a study on how survivors of narcissistic abuse used #NarcissisticAbuse on Twitter to build community and educate others about this often less visible and less talked about form of abuse, and a study on the local sexual violence incident involving LSU student Madison Brooks.
