San Luis Rey

San Luis Rey received its name from the Mission San Luis Rey de Francia that was located in this area in 1798. This mission was the largest mission in California. The city has a noticeable Spanish and Mexican feel due to the long-lived influence of the Spanish and Mexican government. San Luis Rey is home to some of the most beautiful architecture in California. Currently, in San Luis Rey, a museum offers tours, retreats and events, masses and sacraments and more. All are welcome to come learn about the history of San Luis Rey and connect heritage, passed loved ones, history, spirituality, and faith. Just 4.4 miles from Mission Sal Luis Rey Retreat is the California Surf Museum, and 4.2 miles away is the Oceanside Museum of Art. The Surf Museum has a large collection of vintage surfboards and assorted surf accessories. The Oceanside Museum of Art hosts a large variety of art exhibitions every year, including light installations, paintings, sculptures, glass, and more. Come here for classes, tours, and other events.
