Background
Tonika Jones is a triple University of Florida alumna from Lake Butler, FL. Over the past several years, she has worked in higher education in various capacities, but her most rewarding role was serving as an Academic Coach for Student Support Services (SSS). SSS is a federally funded TRIO grant program committed to increasing persistence, retention, and graduation rates among first-generation, low-income, and/or scholars with disabilities. During her tenure, she developed programming designed to enhance the collegiate experience of program participants by fulfilling programmatic goals through the provision of financial literacy education, college/scholarship application assistance, providing exposure to university student involvement and research opportunities. Her position at the college was personally rewarding and allowed Jones to build relationships with and aid students from a similar background as my own, having been a Machen Florida Opportunity Scholar (MFOS). She played a significant role in helping my students navigate their collegiate journeys and while doing so discovered that she not only had a passion for student advocacy, but also one for leveraging technology to create equitable outcomes in education. After attending an Instructurecon conference and working on ed tech-related projects I decided to pursue a career in instructional design. She is elated to collaborate with the College of Nursing faculty and staff to deliver innovative learning solutions to nursing students.
