Manchester United Football Club is one of the most famous sporting institutions in the world. The history of the club dates back to 1878 when it was first formed as Newton Heath L&YR. the initials referred to Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway illustrating its origins as a works team, like so many football clubs founded in those days.
