Anna Brailey

Job Titles:
  • Honours Student
Anna is studying how non-breeding distributions during winter influence cumulative stress-state in Cassin's auklets and rhinoceros auklets at Triangle Island, in British Columbia. Using spatial analysis, and stable isotopes and corticosterone levels in feathers, she will explore individual level correlations between migration return timings, pre-breeding conditions, and lay dates. Anna will work closely with colleagues at Environment & Climate Change Canada, in cluding Drs. Mark Hipfner and Mark Drever, and Katie Studholme and Alice Domalik.

Cayle Cross

Job Titles:
  • Honours Student
Cayle is investigating latitudinal trends of incubation behaviour in rhinoceros auklets from many different colonies in the eastern Pacific Ocean. Using light-level geolocator tags, he will infer individual and colony specific variation in colony arrival dates, pre-laying burrow occupancy patterns, and lay dates. This work will fill basic knowledge gaps concerning the pre-breeding behaviour of rhinoceros auklets. Cayle is working closely with Dr. Mark Hipfner at Environment and Climate Change Canada, and Katie Studholme at Birds Canada.

Claire Rycroft

Claire is working closely with DFO researchers to determine the interactions between migrating salmon smolts and aquaculture infrastructure in Passamaquoddy Bay, a region of eastern Canada with an abundance of salmon farms. Using acoustic telemetry, fundamental aspects of migrating smolt residency times around farms will be quantified, and patterns will be viewed relative to differential gene expression patterns among individuals.

Dr. Jake Brownscombe

Job Titles:
  • Banting Postdoctoral Fellow 2020

Dr. Manon Sorais

Job Titles:
  • MITACS Postdoctoral Fellow
Manon studies how anthropogenic landscape modifications impact wildlife. She has recently joined the Crossin Lab and the Leach's storm petrel Working Group to identify potential causes in the the decline of these iconic seabirds in Eastern Canada. Manon has two main objectives. First, she will investigate the degree to which petrels are exposed to petroleum products in their environment, and determine whether exposure varies amongst colonies of origin and foraging habits. Second, she will work toward establishing a set of biomarkers to identify the colony of origin of stranded petrels based on stable isotopes and trace metals in feathers. Manon's project is funded by MITACS Elevate and Birds Canada.

Dr. Marie Auger-Methe

Job Titles:
  • NSERC Postdoctoral Fellow 2017

Glenn Crossin

Job Titles:
  • Professor
I study the physiological mechanisms that underlie variation in life-history traits, mostly (but not exclusively!) in birds and fish. I received my BSc from the University of New Hampshire, my MSc and PhD from the University of British Columbia, and pursued postdoctoral studies at Simon Fraser University, the British Antarctic Survey, and Fisheries & Oceans Canada.

Marine Ornithology

Job Titles:
  • Associate Editor

Sophie Roy

Job Titles:
  • Honours Student
Sophie will be involved this summer in field projects on Leach's storm petrels, and will focus her research on trace metal and stable isotopes signatures in feathers as part of a biomarker analysis.
