Catherine Lyden

Kay joined the Fistral team in 2018, bringing a wealth of public and private sector experience. She is in responsible for ensuring that customers and trainers have all the information needed to deliver smooth, high quality training courses. In addition to this she supports the Customer Relationship Manager in QA and event evaluation, and is a key member of Fistral's dedicated Customer Support Team. Catherine Lyden is a strong and inspirational trainer, senior manager, and leader. She is highly experienced in project and programme management with specialisms in education, sport, well-being and the 3rd sector. Additionally, she has worked with organisations since 2002 managing, consulting and devising and delivering training. Working extensively with Fistral in higher education alongside other professional contexts, she is dynamic in thinking, innovative in approach, multi-talented in nature, and passionate about theory becoming action. Originally a teacher in secondary schools and 6th form colleges, within two years Catherine had become a subject-expert adviser to the local authority. She relocated to London to become a project manager successfully delivering multi-location, collaborative projects. During this time, and while developing her own team, she developed a keen interest in management and leadership training and development, and also health and wellbeing. Latterly, she worked as a senior programme manager for a very large 3rd sector project which coupled charities, social enterprises and businesses together with the aim of increasing social cohesion and community integration. Catherine has been working with Fistral since 2017 using these skills to deliver training to research staff, PhD students and non-academic employees at universities in the UK and Ireland in addition to many research institutes, DTCs and other knowledge-intensive organisations. As a professionally certified practitioner, and as an active consultant applying best practice day-to-day in academic and industry Catherine Lyden can evidence a strong working knowledge of a range of relevant project management methodologies and toolkit. These include, but are not limited to, PMBOK, Waterfall and PRINCE2. Catherine is a triathlete, marathon runner and all-round sports player. She is involved in musical theatre groups and is a keen pianist also. She is an experienced public speaker and has spoken at large conferences both abroad and in the UK. She is at her happiest when influencing and inspiring others to make a difference in the world.

David Bartholomew

David Bartholomew is a project and programme management professional with over 35 years' of experience in delivering results. Originally trained in IT systems and programming, with an MSc in Intelligent Systems, David transitioned to management and providing business solutions. He has worked with a variety of SMEs, FTSE 100 corporate clients, public sector bodies, international NGOs and UN organisations, spanning many sectors including; finance, utilities, travel, electronics, manufacturing, IT, legal, aerospace, public healthcare, intellectual property, and advanced research. A certified Project Management Professional (PMP), PRINCE2 practitioner, Scrum Master (PSM I and CSM) and Scrum Product Owner (CSPO), David also holds a postgraduate teaching certificate and since the 1990s and has delivered high quality training to over 4000 delegates in industry and higher education institutions in the EEC at graduate and postgraduate level. He was the module lead for project management at the University of Wales Lampeter where he also taught subjects ranging from systems analysis to workplace psychology. David now works with organisations to identify opportunities to strengthen project delivery, develop individual skills, and enhance outcomes. Primarily, David works to develop leadership, management, and development capacity by: developing bespoke training interventions, coaching and mentoring staff, developing processes and governance procedures and designing and delivering facilitation for a variety of project and stakeholder meetings including: Project initiation Requirements gathering Process development Risk workshops Stakeholder communications As a Fistral Associate, David has run bespoke risk assessment workshops with live outputs for senior staff working on ESA's ATHENA and JUICE missions and facilitated specialist risk management sessions. He has also worked with Fraser to deliver Fistral workshops and mentoring to support UCC's roll-out of a Unified PM Approach for strategic projects and masterclasses, conducted mentoring for HR and Academic Administration teams in NUI Galway and has facilitated advanced Masterclasses in Project Management and tailored risk workshop/teaching sessions for AFRC in Glasgow. David's commitment is founded on two underlying beliefs: that project delivery is an area which can add significant organisational value; and that this will only happen if it is applied correctly with commitment and investment in people. A professionally certified PM practitioner, Scrum Master and active consultant applying best practice day-to-day in academic and industry settings as well as when designing and developing training; David Bartholomew can evidence a strong working knowledge of a range of relevant project management methodologies and toolkit. These include, but are not limited to, PMBOK, Agile, Waterfall, Scrum, RAD and PRINCE 2. In the past year, he has designed and successfully delivered new Agile PM and Scrum courses for Fistral to deliver to customers in a range of contexts including the Space sector. Dave is currently conducting personal research into human judgment and decision-making and his other interests include; amateur dramatics, property renovation, equine sports, and dogs.

Dr Fraser Robertson

Dr Fraser Robertson has been involved in large-scale projects for nearly 20 years. He has run project teams for organisations in such diverse locations as Zürich, New York, Shanghai, Johannesburg and Ljubljana; and has used his experience to train and mentor in these cities as well as at HEIs in the UK and Europe. With 13 years training specifically in the HEI sector, 8 years supporting the Space sector, and 10-years supporting candidates towards professional PM certification, his expertise is used to support a broad-range of students, researchers and staff in knowledge-intensive organisations across the UK and globally. Formerly training manager at SunGard's Glasgow research and development centre, Fraser developed a certification and mentoring programme for both internal and client staff based on the government's SFIA Framework. During his relationship with Fistral, he has proven experience delivering practical training for many different, diverse sectors and within world-class organisations and research centres globally. He has delivered for employees on high-profile projects such as CERN, Galileo, Rosetta and the International Space Station, and with partners supporting employees and internships at AWE, the Barnes Group, Boeing, EDF Energy, Lockheed Martin, Rolls Royce and Unilever. He has supported strategic projects such as UCC's Unified PM Approach for University Management Team (Strategy) and the SQA Portfolio Office Capability Improvement Programme; and run bespoke risk assessment workshops with live outputs for senior staff working on European Space Agency ATHENA and JUICE missions. In addition to traditional training courses he has also: delivered bespoke sessions and staff development days for many customers including the Royal College of Art, Association of Research Managers and Administrators, European Space Agency, Bristol and Bath universities; delivered the opening plenary for the Scottish Part-Time Researcher Conference; and has regularly been asked to support knowledge-intensive and/or research-led or research-related bodies such as DTCs and EU-funded international projects in the UK, Ireland and overseas. He graduated with a Doctorate of Business Administration in 2015. The title of his research is "Participant perceptions of value: a qualitative framework for evaluating project management training". Most recently, Fraser has led the design, development and delivery of the University of Bournemouth Research Leadership programme for Early- and Mid- Career Researchers which after a very successful pilot has resulted in an ongoing Programme of delivery for ECRS and MCAs, and Associate Professors in BU. Fraser has also led development of a Training Programme to support the implementation of a bespoke research-based Project Management methodology for the Hutton Group and the accompanying tailored PM courses for staff. As a professionally certified practitioner, and as an active consultant applying best practice day-to-day in academic and industry settings as well as when designing and developing training, Dr Robertson can evidence a strong working knowledge of a range of relevant project management methodologies and toolkit. These include, but are not limited to, PMBOK, Agile, Scrum, Waterfall, and PRINCE2. Fraser enjoys running and entering 10k and half marathon races, watching and playing football, and scuba diving. He qualified as a referee with the Scottish Football Association. Fraser has played musical instruments in several bands and likes attending concerts.

Dr Paul Lyden

Dr Paul Lyden has been managing projects and successfully delivering project management training courses in most European countries, USA and the Middle East for over 25 years. Paul has extensive experience in managing projects in the private and public sectors, including for many universities. He specialises in project risk management and the application of analytical techniques in project management. Paul completed his PhD in Natural Philosophy (Physics) from the University of Aberdeen and went on to spend 13 years in the computer industry before establishing Fistral Training and Consultancy in 1991. Paul has retained his life-long interest in science, particularly Physics and Geophysics and is an ambassador for STEMNET to help create "opportunities to inspire young people in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics". In addition to his role as a Fistral Director, Paul uses his retirement time to be more involved in theatre, curling, and enjoys an active interest in travel.

Dr Rosemary Doyle

Dr Rosemary Doyle has worked with organisations since 1993 devising and delivering training, research, consultancy and 1:1 coaching. She has been training for over 20-years, 14 of which within the HEI and HE sector. She specialises in Team Working, Communication, DiSC® Behavioural Profiling, Personal/Team Leadership, Personal/Team Development, Positive Psychology, Change, Resilience, and Managing/Motivating staff for groups and individuals. Rosemary's training interventions are based on sound theoretical foundations and are delivered using highly participative active-learning methods to ensure maximum retention and engagement allowing the rigour of academic research to balance with the pragmatism demanded by managers. Holding a DiSC® professional user certification from Wiley since 2007, this underpins her experience and use of DiSC® Behavioural Profiling for group / individual training and coaching; and she is also accredited by the International Coach Federation having completed a diploma in Transformational Coaching™ in 2016.

Pauline Donachy

Pauline is a highly experienced project and programme manager who has run commercial, academic and European-funded projects in the UK and abroad. Having completed an MA (Hons) from the University of Glasgow, she then went on to achieve an M.Phil (distinction) from Stirling University and a PRINCE2 Practitioner qualification, before working for private and public sector organisations in the UK and internationally. She is currently studying for PMP certification from the PMI. In addition to her management experience, Pauline brings an in-depth knowledge of the HEI sector, developing training programmes, experience in online, blended and distance-learning approaches, and experience running commercial and business units within various Scottish universities. Joining the team in 2010, Pauline's role at Fistral is to ensure that all customers are well supported: from scheduling courses to marketing and developing Fistral provision. She has successfully run the contracts for some of our largest customers including the European Space Agency and runs the team to support the account management which includes a finance officer and communications and events support. She regularly attends the Vitae Researcher Development International Conference and the Staff Development Forum Conference for staff and organisational developers in the HE sector, and is annually invited to present at the BME ECR conference in London. Pauline has also been responsible for many consultancy projects including: delivering a post-project evaluation work package for a multi-national EU-funded research project; has driven the development of a plan for implementing a portfolio maturity model for a large public-sector organisation; and managed development of a Training Programme to support the implementation of a bespoke research-based Project Management methodology for the Hutton Group.
