Dr. Jim Jansen is a computer scientist who has conducted several consulting projects (log analysis, statistical analysis) and expert witnessing cases (patent litigation, civil litigation, and class action suits) in the areas of search engine optimization (SEO), search engine marketing (SEM), keyword advertising, web analytics, co-registration, domain parking, webpage access, webpage history, and click fraud. He researches the affordances of the Web for searching, online advertising, and ecommerce, focusing on the interaction among the person, information, and technology. His areas of research are Web analytics, sponsored search, keyword advertising, social computing, and online social networking. Hhis current research project concerns personas. Jim has 380 or so authored research publications, with articles appearing in a range of journals and conferences. He is a co-author of the book, Web Search: Public Searching of the Web, co-editor of Handbook of Research on Weblog Analysis, author of Understanding User - Web Interactions Via Web Analytics, and author of Understanding Sponsored Search: A Coverage of the Core Elements of Keyword Advertising. Jim is an Adjunct Professor with the College of Information Sciences and Technology at The Pennsylvania State University, a principal scientist with the Qatar Computing Research Institute, and a professor with the College of Science and Engineering, Hamad bin Khalifa University. He has previously served on the faculty with the University of Maryland (world campus) and the United States Military Academy (at West Point). He is a graduate of West Point and has a PhD in computer science from Texas A&M University, along with master degrees from Texas A&M (computer science) and Troy State (international relations). Jim is the editor-in-chief of the journal, Information Processing and Management, former editor of the journal, Internet Research, a member of the editorial boards of eight international journals, and he has served on the research committee for the Search Engine Marketing Professional Organization (SEMPO). He has received several awards, including an ACM Research Award, six application development awards, and other writing, publishing, research, and leadership honors. His research work is highly cited. He is actively involved in teaching undergraduate (information technology (IT) project management, keyword advertising) and graduate courses (searching, retrieval, analytics). In the keyword advertising area, Jim has participated in the 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015 Google Online Marketing Challenges, with student teams in the Final 15 for all years. His current research projects centers on personas. Jim has held several jobs, including busboy, dishwasher, janitor, cook, and movie projectionist. Jim served in the US Army as an enlisted soldier in the Infantry and the Signal Corps as an officer. After serving in the military, he transitioned to his second career in academia and research.
