Jennifer A. Sutherland

Jennifer Sutherland is a licensed psychologist and has been providing psychotherapy since 2003. She received her Psy.D. at St. John's University in Queens, New York where she has also worked as an adjunct professor teaching courses on the Graduate and Undergraduate level. She received clinical training at the Albert Ellis Institute for Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy and has more recently begun applying DBT to issues of depression, anxiety, borderline personality disorder, self-injurious and suicidal behaviors. Dr. Sutherland has worked in several school districts on Long Island as a certified school psychologist providing psychoeducational assessments as well as group and individual counseling for students in grades 7-12. Dr. Sutherland is well versed in crisis intervention, risk and threat assessment both at an individual and systemic level. She is currently a consultant working with several local colleges in order to provide psychological assessments and threat/risk assessments to students of concern. Dr. Sutherland has also been working with local school districts to bring mindfulness programs to elementary and secondary levels. She enjoys conducting workshops on topics such as mindfulness, assertiveness and DBT skills for families. Dr. Sutherland is extensively trained within the area of DBT and has worked with several consultation teams to provide comprehensive research based treatment. In addition, Dr. Sutherland specializes in working with adolescents and their families in teaching self-control, anger management, and behavior management strategies in attempts to increase prosocial behaviors.
