The stories of my childhood resound with thick accents of Greek immigrants. A community that spoke of monsters that were utterly foreign to me: hunger and death and Nazi occupiers. Loss and fear were common themes. Tales of journeys to a new land where the people spoke a strange language. Early chapters filled with struggle transitioned to love and humor and finally to establishment. I stood at the end of a long arc of revolution that left me with a profound respect for the power of story... I earned a degree in English literature from Vanderbilt University to the perplexion of a family to that point without a member educated past high school. Of what value could that degree possibly be?... It was harnessed by the public relations firm of Hill and Knowlton to change perceptions and behaviors. In Denver I helped Southwest sell airline tickets, touted the environmental safety of a mining company and drew consumers to spend their recreational dollars at a new casino and Elitch Gardens..
