In the 90s - based on foreign examples - the leaders of the Vehicle Engineering Faculty of the Budapest University of Technology and Economics and that of the Vehicles Department of the Hungarian Scientific Society for Mechanical Engineering (SSME) decided to establish a professional organization to protect the interests of the industry. There were many other factors urging the foundation. By the end of the 20th century an increasing number of multinational companies established their subsidiaries in Hungary. In addition to companies extending their productions, there also appeared other firms focusing on research and development (R&D). As a result of all this, in December 1998 the ten most influential automotive companies founded the Association of the Hungarian Automotive Industry (MGSZ) re-established in 2014 under the name of MAGE (Society of Hungarian Automotive Industry).
