Psych Safe ER was formed to help address the growing challenges of managing behavioral health patients in medical emergency rooms. 6,171,000 patients present to medical emergency rooms each year with severe psychiatric disorders. Whereas these medical emergency departments are set up to provide exceptional care for medical patients, behavioral health patients are traditionally marginalized, and put in a potentially deadly environment. Although the information is not readily available, it is estimated that 144 patients commit suicide in medical emergency departments annually. Through a safe environment of care, and improved monitoring, these deaths could have been prevented. Psych Safe ER has a working understanding of the multiple systems in the complex and dynamic behavioral health environment.
