Dr McDarra achieved Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons (FRACS) and Fellowship of the Australian Orthopaedic Association (FAOrthA) in 2012, and then went on to complete a prestigious sub-specialised training Fellowship in lower-limb arthroplasty (joint replacement) under the supervision of luminary Queensland orthopaedic surgeons, Dr Ray Randle and Dr David Liu.
