GREAT NORTH BAY OYSTERS are cultivated in cages, because we recognize that harvesting oysters from the wild generally requires dredging, which disrupts not only oysters, but every other organism living in the beds. By cultivating our oysters in cages placed in wild waters, we have a smaller environmental footprint by minimizing disruption to the sea floor, but also by contributing to the native population by seeding the natural beds; when our oysters reproduce, they each send millions of eggs into the sea, effectively ‘seeding' the natural/native environment.
