FIRE LAB - Key Persons
Daphne is a visual designer. She enjoys working in interdisciplinary environments. She recently submitted her PhD thesis focused on science-art education via the medium of installation art. Her background is drama and performance, and she is passionate about exploring the field of art-science education, communication, and engagement. She joined FIRE Lab in early 2020.
George is a home-ed student who is inspired by rivers and fishes. He describes himself as ‘a bit of a fish maniac' with particular passion for sturgeon, and is a keen wildlife photographer. George, his sister Rose, and their parents Kate and Rorie collaborate with FIRE Lab team on community-lead fish projects. George is a co-editor at Green Fuse Magazine, a zine by and for young naturalists.
James was a research assistant with FIRE Lab from 2018-2020. His PhD focused on invertebrate responses to water management operations in Great Britain. James is now a Science and Technical Officer at the River Restoration Centre.
Loren was an MSc student with the Department of Biosciences at Swansea University. She worked with FIRE Lab team to explore underwater cameras as a technique for characterising the diversity and behaviour of aquatic invertebrate communities. Loren graduated 12/2019.
Merryn draws on a background in geography and social science to explore how people relate with their environment. For her PhD, she studied perceptions of sea-level rise, and since then has worked on topics including fracking and coastal well-being. She joined FIRE Lab in early 2020 and is very excited to be working with the FIRE Lab team, using creative methods to engage people with freshwater environments.
Rochelle is a BSc student majoring in Marine Science, but she likes to keep it fresh by also contributing to mapping infrastructure on rivers in Great Britain. For her dissertation she is exploring some very fishy questions by examining narratives shared about migratory fishes on different River Trust's websites.
Rose is a home-ed student who has a deep love for all animals and wants to be a conservationist when she is older. Rose loves river swimming, and along with her brother George, and their parents Kate and Rorie, she collaborates with FIRE Lab team on community-lead fish projects. Rose is a co-editor at Green Fuse Magazine, a zine by and for young naturalists.
Sayali was a Research Assistant with FIRE Lab from 2018-2020. She graduated in 2018 from Swansea University with an MSc in Geographical Information Systems and Climate Change, and is now pursuing a doctoral degree at University of Dundee as a Hydro Nation Scholar. She is passionate about leading scientific research to understand the impacts of climate change on river systems and urban environments. Apart from this, she enjoys science communication and engagement.

Steph is a Sêr Cymru Research Fellow. She is passionate about freshwater ecosystems, particularly rivers, and about people's relationships with these systems. Grounded in a liberal arts education and trained in environmental studies and spatial sciences, Steph draws on sciences, arts, and writing to address diverse questions and to communicate about fresh waters. She joined FIRE Lab in early 2018.
