Emmy Simmons

Emmy Simmons is an independent consultant on international development issues, focusing on food, agriculture, Africa, and sustainability issues. She is currently a member of the Global Panel on Agriculture and Food Systems for Nutrition and a non-resident senior adviser for the Food Security Program of the Center for Strategic and International Studies. In addition to serving on the Independent Steering Committee for the CGIAR Research Program on Agriculture for Nutrition and Health, she serves on the board of SNV USA. Over the last several years, she has been the co-chair of AGree, a US-based initiative to reform food and agriculture policy; a member of the Roundtable on Science and Technology for Sustainability at the National Academies of Science; and a member of the boards of the International Livestock Research Institute, the International Institute for Tropical Agriculture, and the World Vegetable Center (AVRDC). She completed a career of nearly 30 years with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in 2005 and served as the Assistant Administrator for USAID's Bureau for Economic Growth, Agriculture, and Trade prior to retirement. She also worked in the Ministry of Planning and Economic Affairs in Liberia and taught and conducted research at Ahmadu Bello University in Nigeria. She holds an M.S. in Agricultural Economics from Cornell University and a B.A. from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

John McDermott joined IFPRI in late 2011 to lead the CGIAR Research Program on Agriculture for Nutrition and Health (A4NH). Previously, he was Deputy Director General and Director of Research at the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI). As a researcher, McDermott's career has focused on public health, animal health, and livestock research in developing countries, primarily in Africa. He has led projects on zoonotic and emerging diseases in Asia and Africa. McDermott has a strong background in quantitative methods, including modeling, study design, and statistics. He has authored or co-authored 200 peer-reviewed publications, book chapters, and conference papers; advised more than 30 post-graduate students, including 20 PhD graduates; and served as an advisor to FAO, WHO, OIE, and other international agencies. As a research leader, McDermott has played a pivotal role in research for development innovations, including the establishment of the Biosciences East and Central Africa hub and the Global Alliance for Livestock Veterinary Medicines.

Joyce Kinabo

Joyce Kinabo is a Professor of Human Nutrition in the Department of Food Technology, Nutrition, and Consumer Sciences at the Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) in Morogoro, Tanzania. She has been lecturing for more than 32 years on human nutrition, nutritional physiology, body composition and energy balance, nutritional epidemiology, maternal and child nutrition, and food and nutrition security. Her research has focused mainly on energy balance studies and the thermal effect of food, maternal and child nutrition, adolescent nutrition, food-body interactions, and nutritional status. She is involved in community nutrition research, focusing on enhancing capacity of communities to identify nutrition challenges and solutions by developing nutrition interventions to address their unique nutrition challenges in various food systems. With the AgriDiet project, she led the Tanzania country review of how national policies impact upon nutrition and was also responsible for developing the national methodology plan for the field work in Tanzania. Currently, she leads a team of researchers at SUA to undertake impact assessment of the Improving Nutrition Outcomes Through Optimized Agricultural Investments project being implemented by the Food, Agriculture, and Natural Resources Policy Analysis Network (FANRPAN). She holds a PhD in Nutritional Physiology from Glasgow University, an M.Sc. in Food Science from Leeds University, and a B.S. in Agriculture with a major in Food Science and Technology from the University of Dar es Salaam.

Mark Lundy is a Senior Scientist at the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT), in Cali, Colombia, where he leads the Sustainable Food Systems team. His work focuses on the role of markets in reducing rural poverty, including learning networks to increase capacities for enterprise development, the role of public agencies to promote market access, and how to establish and sustain effective trading relationships between buyers, smallholder farmers, and consumers. Emerging areas of work in sustainable food systems include inclusion in traditional markets, climate resilience and environmental sustainability of food systems, and multi-actor platforms to improve decision making. Mark is lead author of guides on rural enterprise development, the LINK method on inclusive business models, and an active participant in multi-stakeholder platforms focused on sustainability and smallholder inclusion.

Mary Amuyunzu-Nyamongo

Mary Amuyunzu-Nyamongo is the Founding Director of and Technical Adviser to the African Institute for Health and Development (AIHD), an organization based in Nairobi, Kenya, that conducts research, training, and advocacy on health and development issues. She has more than 28 years of work experience in Kenya and the African region, and has published widely in the areas of health and development, focusing on non-communicable diseases, HIV/AIDS, gender, youth, mothers and children under five, rural and urban poverty, and health promotion in general. She provides consultancy services for institutions such as the World Bank, World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, and the Government of Kenya. She serves on international and national committees and boards, including the Immunization and Vaccines-Related Implementation Research Advisory Committee, the Regional Programme Review Group for WHO, and the Mectizan Donation Program, and chairs the National Biosafety Authority of Kenya. She holds a PhD in Social Anthropology from Cambridge University and a B.A. in Anthropology from the University of Nairobi.
