Anna Gaston

Anna is a partner in our private client team and has a wide practice advising international and UK based private clients, family offices and trustees, on matters including succession and estate planning, trust law, UK personal taxation, philanthropy and charity issues. Anna worked in Jersey in the Channel Islands for a number of years and has significant experience dealing with all aspects of trust law and practice. Anna regularly advises settlors, trustees and beneficiaries in relation to the administration of a trust, the rights of each party and the UK tax consequences arising in relation to both UK and international structures. Anna also advises philanthropists and charity trustees on charity law issues, philanthropic matters and tax efficient giving including cross border giving. Anna also advises on the establishment and ongoing administration of charities. Archie Sherbrooke

Catherine Pugsley

Catherine is a partner in our private client team and has a wide practice advising international and UK based private clients, family offices and trustees, on matters including succession and estate planning, trust law, UK personal taxation, philanthropy and charity issues. Having worked in Europe for many years Catherine has direct experience in advising on the practicalities of cross-border estate planning and probate between the civil and common law jurisdictions. She has also advised on the cross-border repatriation of heritage property. Catherine also advises domiciled and non-domiciled clients on the tax implications on their arrival in to or departure from the UK and on the creation of corporate holding and trust structures for the preservation and protection of assets and the associated applicable tax planning. Catherine also advises philanthropists and charity trustees on charity law issues, philanthropic matters and tax efficient giving including cross border giving. She has extensive experience dealing with vulnerable individuals, both adults and children, and frequently assists with the preparation of asset protection structures and lasting powers of attorney often working with medical advisers to obtain the best outcome to protect the individual. Catherine qualified in a City law firm in 1998 as a private client lawyer, she transferred to Italy with an international firm as an associate in finance and subsequently opened her own legal business in Italy advising private clients, trustees and family offices on their cross border requirements. Since her return to the UK she has continued to advise both UK and international clients.

Clifford Woodroffe

Some of his career highlights to date include: Clifford joined Lee Bolton Lee, as it then was, in 2005 to commence his training contract and has spent the whole of his career very contentedly at the firm. Ed Henderson

Ed is a partner in the commercial and corporate team handling all aspects of business law. He spends the majority of his time on mergers & acquisitions, company structuring, shareholder matters, commercial agreements and employment. Ed leads the Firm's corporate and commercial work. His clients are companies, SME's, investors - both international and domestic, start-ups, entrepreneurs, charities and educational organisations. He particularly enjoys getting involved at the start of a client's business journey and forging long term relationships. As well as commercial transactional work, Ed's business practice includes corporate governance, company re-structuring, re-financing, shareholder matters, fundraises and compliance - in particular, data protection/GDPR. Ed also has a busy employment workload usually acting for employers in contentious and non-contentious work and advising on TUPE. He has a particular interest in stress at work and personal injury advice and claims. He also regularly works alongside the IP & IT and the dispute resolution teams. His work is across the Firm's specialist sectors including acting for charities, faith institutions, restauranteurs and those in the wine and spirits trade. Howard Dellar

He is Senior Partner and Head of the Ecclesiastical Education & Charities Department at LBMW. He was educated at St Edward's School Cheltenham and the University of Bristol where he studied Theology and Religious Studies, graduating with an MA in theology. He qualified as a solicitor in 1999 following a training contract with a firm in North Cornwall, and was an assistant solicitor in firms in Exeter and Oxford. He joined Lee Bolton & Lee (now LBMW) in 2001. He is Registrar to the Dioceses of Bangor, Ely, Guildford and Liverpool and is the Registrar of the Faculty Office of the Archbishop of Canterbury and he is Deputy Registrar to the Dioceses of Lincoln and Derby. He is the solicitor to many charitable companies, Maintained schools, Academies, Independent schools and a number of Church of England Diocesan Boards of Finance and Education. He advises the Whitgift Foundation and a number of Multi- Academy trusts. He is a director/trustee of board of The Woodard Corporation. He is also a member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners and is an executor and trustee of numerous estates / trusts and has particular interest in cross-border succession issues with France . He was the solicitor and executor in the following High Court Case Dellar v Zivy and others [2007] EWHC 2266 (Ch), [2007] All ER (D) 121 (Oct). Jane Grenfell

Jane is our charities manager and works on our education, ecclesiastical and charities team. She has an extensive knowledge of charity law and its application in England and Wales in particular in relation to schools, colleges and Universities and advises clients on all aspects of setting up, registering and operating a charity. Jane specialises in governance reviews, trustee and senior officer training and updating governing documents as well as helping clients with understanding their trusts, dealing with their property and addressing risk. She understands the importance of balancing legal and practical requirements and is able to quickly find solutions to often complex issues. She also has at her finger-tips a range of options for trustees to achieve their goals with minimal need for Charity Commission intervention. Experience Before joining LBMW, Jane worked for 28 years at the Charity Commission, where she was Head of Policy and Guidance, Head of Registration, Head of Outreach and Visits, Head of Schools and Education and deputy head of Armed Forces Charities. In her final post at the Commission she was responsible for delivering the Core Knowledge Programme to staff. Jane has given lectures and provided training to lawyers and trustees on various aspects of charity law.

Jessica Groves

Jessica deals with both the sale and acquisition of both freehold and leasehold residential properties, including new build properties and listed buildings; leasehold enfranchisement, usually acting for individual leaseholders exercising statutory rights; voluntary freehold acquisitions and lease extensions and all other aspects of residential property transaction. Khalid Sofi

Khalid is a partner and Head of Charity & Not for Profit and advises on issues relating to Charities & Not for profit organisations and deals with contentious and non-contentious matters. He has several years' experience advising charities and not for profit organisations on a range of issues from the initial set up and registration process through to specific issues of governance, audit and risk management, re-structuring, mergers, trading subsidiaries and charity commission investigations and inquiries. He advises groups with a range of charitable purposes as well as Professional Associations and Community Interest Companies. He also advises high net worth individuals regarding setting up and managing Philanthropic Foundations. Michael Anderson

Michael is a Solicitor in both our Dispute Resolution and Commercial and IP teams. He joined LBMW as a trainee solicitor in September 2019 before qualifying as a Solicitor in 2021. He spends much of his time advising on property and charity litigation, IP law and trademark oppositions and non-contentious commercial or corporate agreements. Experience Michael deals with a variety of disputes ranging from disputes between landlords and tenants, commercial and contractual disputes between companies, shareholders disputes including unfair prejudice claims, charity litigation, trust disputes and contested probate as well as defamation claims. He also advises on settlement agreements in connection with employment disputes. His clients are varied and include companies, charities, public bodies and individuals. He advises several international clients on the protection of Protected Designations of Origin and Protected Geographical Indications in the wine, spirits and food sectors. Michael has experience in trademark opposition proceedings in the UK IPO relating to the protection of geographical indications including Champagne, Cognac and others. Nishita Gudka

Nishita is a partner in our Real Estate team. She advises on all aspects of real estate transactions including commercial, residential and landlord and tenant work. Nishita acts for a corporate clients, small businesses, individuals as well as a range of charities from national charities and organisations with significant property investment portfolios through to schools and small charities. Nishita has particular expertise in acting for charities with substantial property portfolios and advises on the implications of the Charities Act on property assets, including the leasehold management matters and the development of land through non-primary trading vehicles. Nishita is regularly asked by charity clients to provide strategic property advice and works closely with our Charity team to ensure that clients understand and work within the confines of their trusts/governing document, suggesting amendments or changes where appropriate. Ola Olajide

Ola also worked with Baroness Cox at the House of Lords as a legal advisor was an assistant for an MEP at the European parliament in Brussels, giving her good exposure to various key legislative institutions. She read law the London school of Economics and attended BPP law school (London) where she did the Bar Course and was later Called to the Bar at the Inner Temple. Rebecca Martin

Rebecca is a trainee in our Ecclesiastical, Education and Charity department Prior to Joining LBMW Rebecca worked as a legal officer at the Catholic Education Service. In this role she worked closely with dioceses, religious orders and policy officials at the DfE. Rebecca was a Court of Appeal judicial assistant to Lord Justice Flaux where she experienced a wide range of commercial appellate work. She worked on the high-profile cases of BNP Paribas SA v Trattamento Rifiuti Metropolitani SPA [2019] EWCA Civ 768, Huawei v ZTE [2019] EWCA Civ 38 and Reading BC v Ali [2019] EWHC 200 (Admin). Rebecca also worked at the Law Commission of England and Wales, where she contributed to projects relating to money laundering and corruption of public officials. Shameela Ahmed

Susan Newell

Susan is an associate in our Ecclesiastical, Education and Charities Department. She advises clients on the setting up and running of charities, particularly in relation to governance. Susan works with a wide range of charities and not for profit organisations, from small unincorporated trusts to large corporate charities, including Royal Charter bodies. Given her background in company law, she has a particular interest in governance, and often assists trustees to update and improve their governance systems and documents. She has considerable knowledge and experience of educational charities, such as schools (both state schools and independent schools) and universities and colleges, particularly those with a Church of England foundation. She has a strong working knowledge of the Department of Education's suite of documents for multi-academy trusts, and works efficiently with the Charity Commission, the DfE, and other government departments.
