DR FERGUS FAIRMICHAEL

Fergus trained as a doctor at Newcastle University and has worked as a junior doctor within the Newcastle Upon Tyne Hospitals Trust over the past three years. He has maintained a strong interest in the application of technology to the domain of healthcare following his Masters course in Bioinformatics and Computational Systems Biology and hopes to continue with this field of research in the future.

DR RAGHDA ZAHRAN

Raghda is a Learning Enhancement and Technology Advisor within the Learning and Teaching Development Service at Newcastle University. Before joining academia, Raghda led the development and roll-out of several software projects in the US and NMEA. She worked in the healthcare and financial investment sectors. She applies her experience to collaborative design jams, sprints and hackathons. She holds a Masters in Information Security and Doctorate in Education. Together with Tom, Raghda organised a co-design workshop joining health professionals, software designers and providers, and wrote the 2021 update of the Learning Healthcare Project report.

DR TOM FOLEY

Tom is a doctor, academic and ex-software engineer. His interest in Learning Healthcare Systems stems from a frustration with the inadequate evidence base that he encounters in his clinical work and the apparent inability of traditional methodologies to bridge the gap. In recent years, Tom has written reports on other healthcare policy issues for the Royal College of Psychiatrists, Centre for Mental Health, NHS England, Academy of Medical Royal Colleges and others. He has held management positions with the Care Quality Commission and Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management and committee and associate positions with Monitor, BMA and GMC. He has also worked as a management consultant for PwC and BDO. Tom is currently the Senior Clinical Lead for Data at NHS Digital, the organisation that collects, analyses and distributes data for the English National Health System.

Prof Luke Vale

Prof Vale is a researcher with an international reputation in economic evaluation and health technology assessment and has contributed significantly to the growth in the use of systematic reviews and economic modelling in this field. This expertise is built on over 15 years of health economics experience. He currently holds the Health Foundation Chair in Health Economics at Newcastle University where he leads the Health Economics Group. Prior to joining Newcastle University he led an independent academic group that conducted appraisals of new and existing diagnostic and therapeutic interventions for the National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE).
