LKA - Key Persons
Johnny (left) began training at LKA in 1972, right after Bruce Lee's Green Hornet series aired on television. He earned his black belt in 1975 and began to excel in competition. He won the All South Championships multiple times and was a National Champion and member of the U.S. Team. Now, he is a coach on the U.S. National Team. His teaching focuses on managing the distance and timing for sparring or self-defense.
Cathy began training at LKA at age 14 and has practiced diligently since. Dedicated to improving, she moved to Japan, the birthplace of karate, at age 19 and lived and trained in several dojos under the world's top masters. Cathy's teaching style incorporates fun and challenging drills to train for real-world scenarios, always with a positive & traditional karate attitude. Read interview here.
Maria began training in 1989 and earned her black belt in 1991. Maria has competed and placed in many regional & international competitions. She is an internationally certified instructor, examiner & judge. In her classes, you will build a strong base of fundamentals as she gradually introduces new techniques or concepts through explanation and exercises.
Doug has been one of Sensei Mikami's longest continuously training students. He has traveled to Japan to train several times and has a comprehensive understanding of techniques and concepts which he is able to convey to youth through training drills and individualized attention. Jerry began training under Sensei Kattawar Sr. and Sensei Mikami in 1970. He was the youngest person at the time to receive a junior black belt under the JKA in the United States. Jerry has competed and Won at the National and International level in many organizations that include: ISKF, AAU, USAKF, WUKO, and PUKO. He was a member of the U.S. Team from 1985-1993, and served as team captain in 87-89. Representing the U.S. in five World and three Pan American championships (Sydney, Cairo, Budapest, Japan, France, Brazil, and Canada). Highest individual honors include, Bronze- World Cup, Gold- Pan American. Jerry previously taught for eight years at Delta State University while attending College and earning his Bachelor degree in Business. He produced several ISKF,AAU, USAKF, and Collegiate National champions. He is a certified instructor, examiner & judge. He has retired from UPS after a career of 36 years in management. Jerry with experience, leadership, and enthusiasm teaches strong basics that can be applied and built upon. He looks to motivate and develop individuals to reach their full potential.
Fathi Jarushi began karate in Jordan and spent 8+ years training in Japan at the JKA Headquarters and in the formidable university clubs before meeting his wife, Cathy, and coming to train with Sensei Mikami in Louisiana. He now trains at the LKA alongside his wife and son. Fathi advanced classes challenge the mind & body to forge strong technique & spirit.
