CONANICUT MARINE SERVICES

CMS was founded in 1974 by Jamestown natives, Bill and May (Dickinson) Munger. Bill grew up in the West Ferry area of Jamestown and was always addicted to the boats in his Dad's boat-building shop. In 1974, Bill, in his mid-twenties decided to change his focus from yacht design to yacht repair and maintenance. At this time most boats were wooden and Bill had a shop in their home basement while May did the books from their kitchen table. Daughter Marilyn and son Steve also helped out with the family business. Bill recalls the business was built "shingle by shingle, employee by employee". The Mungers won a bid to lease the town basin and pier and built marina facilities there. That provided the seed to begin CMS and also the village as businesses returned to the area.
