Classmate Mike Davidson has brought to our attention the unveiling of a statue of former Secretary of Labor Frances Perkins on August 17th in downtown Ithaca (100 West Seneca Street). Perkins should be well known to our ILR classmates as she was a lecturer in the ILR School during our years at Cornell. She was appointed to her Cabinet post by FDR , being the first female Cabinet member ever, serving from 1933 to 1945. She was instrumental in the development of many New Deal policies such as Social Security, the minimum wage, and the 40-hour workweek, to name a few. Cornell's department of Athletics and Physical Education has announced plans to build an indoor sports and recreation facility on Tower Road.
