Anna Althea Hills (January 28, 1882 - June 13, 1930) was an American plein air painter who specialized in impressionist landscapes of the Southern California coast.
Hills attended Olivet College, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in New York City. After her schooling, she worked for Arthur Wesley Dow. Hills traveled in Holland and England, attended the Academie Julian and studied with John Noble Barlow. She spent time in Lamorna Cove, home to many artists in the turn of the 20th century , including Samuel Lamorna Birch, and was with her brother, Willie Hills, at Inn cottage in the 1911 England Census. After returning to the United States, Hills traveled to the west coast and she switched from interior figures to impressionist landscapes. Hills settled in Laguna Beach, California where she opened a studio and taught.
Besides her painting, Hills was known for community activism. She was involved with the Presbyterian church and ran the Sunday school. For six years, she was president of the Laguna Beach Art Association (founded in 1918). As president, it was Hills' strong advocacy that led to founding the Laguna Beach Art Museum in Laguna Beach, California in 1929. In addition, Hills urged her friend, the respected artist and critic Jennie V. Cannon, to create at her summer home in Carmel-by-the-Sea a similar organization and art gallery, which was eventually founded in 1927 as the Carmel Art Association and adopted verbatim the Laguna Beach preamble: "To advance the knowledge of and interest in art; to create a spirit of co-operation and fellowship between painter and public." Two years earlier Hills had been honored with a reception in Carmel.
Camille "Cami" Levin (born April 24, 1990) is a retired American professional soccer defender. She played for the Stanford Cardinal women's soccer team that won the 2011 NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Tournament. She most recently played for Vålerenga in the Toppserien. and in 2013 was the captain of the United States U-23 women's national soccer team. Levin currently works for WWE in their talent relations department.
Levin was born in California to Desmond and Diane Levin, both from South Africa, and is Jewish. She has two younger siblings, Jay and Savannah Levin, who played for the USC Trojans women's soccer team that won the 2016 NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Tournament, and currently plays for Kopparbergs/Göteborg FC in the Damallsvenskan.
She attended Tarbut V'Torah Community Day School, a Jewish school in Irvine, California, where Levin played on a co-ed team for at least one season and was named to the NSCAA All-America team in 2006 and 2007. With the Cal South Olympic Development Program (ODP) '90 state team, Levin won the ODP national championship in 2006 as well as three regional titles. Starting from age nine through her high school years, she played club soccer for Slammers FC '89 and helped the team win three Cal South State Cups, a United States Youth Soccer Association regional championship, and two U.S. club national tournaments.
Christa B. Allen (born November 11, 1991) is an American actress. She is known for playing the younger version of Jennifer Garner's characters in 13 Going on 30 (2004) and Ghosts of Girlfriends Past (2009), as well as for her role as socialite Charlotte Grayson on the ABC drama series Revenge. Allen was born in Wildomar, California. She is the youngest of nine siblings, with four elder brothers as well as four elder stepbrothers. She once spent a summer in a circus.
The harbor, built in the 1960s and dedicated on July 31, 1971, is home to a marina, shops, and restaurants, and is a point of departure for the Catalina Express, a transportation service to and from the City of Avalon on Catalina Island. The entire harbor of Dana Point, including the Embarcadero Marina shops and restaurants, is set for complete demolition and redevelopment. The current vintage nautical style is being abandoned for a Tech Minimalist concept using metal roofs as well as Minimalist landscaping.
Daryl Gates (born Darrel Francis Gates; August 30, 1926 - April 16, 2010) was the Chief of the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) from 1978 to 1992. His length of tenure was second only to that of William H. Parker. As chief of police, he took a hardline, aggressive, paramilitary approach to law enforcement. Gates is co-credited with the creation of SWAT teams with LAPD's John Nelson, who others claim was the originator of SWAT in 1965. Gates also co-founded D.A.R.E. along with the Los Angeles Unified School District.
After the Rodney King beating and the riots afterward, Gates retired from the police department. He was attributed with much of the blame.
Deborah Lynn "Debbie" Friedman (February 23, 1951 - January 9, 2011) was an American singer-songwriter of Jewish religious songs and melodies. She is best known for her setting of "Mi Shebeirach", the prayer for healing, which is used by hundreds of congregations across America. Her songs are used by some Orthodox Jewish congregations, as well as non-Orthodox Jewish congregations. Friedman was a feminist, and Orthodox Jewish feminist Blu Greenberg noted that while Friedman's music impacted most on Reform and Conservative liturgy, "she had a large impact [in] Modern Orthodox shuls, women's tefillah [prayer], the Orthodox feminist circles.... She was a religious bard and angel for the entire community."
Garret Joseph Anderson (born June 30, 1972) is an American former professional baseball left fielder. He played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the California / Anaheim Angels / Los Angeles Angles of Anaheim, Atlanta Braves, and Los Angeles Dodgers between 1994 and 2010. He holds Angels franchise records for career games played (2,013), at bats (7,989), hits (2,368), runs scored (1,024), runs batted in (RBI) (1,292), total bases (3,743), extra base hits (796), singles (1,572), doubles (489), grand slams (8), RBI in a single game (10) and consecutive games with an RBI (12), as well as home runs by a left-handed hitter (272). A three-time All-Star, he helped lead the Angels to the 2002 World Series title, and was named Most Valuable Player of the 2003 All-Star Game.
Jon Serl (1894-1993) was an American artist. He is best remembered as a painter like the American artists Grandma Moses and Edward Hicks. He also worked in other roles and under several different names. These included as a vaudeville artist named Slats; as a voiceover performer for Hollywood named Ned Palmer, and as a migrant fruit collector, better known under the name Jerry Palmer.
Jon Serl was born as Josef Searls in 1894 in Olean, New York. He was the fifth child of seven. He grew up in a vaudevillian theatrical family. This contributed to his early artistic talents, including performance, acting, dancing, singing and as a female impersonator. Jon Serl was one of his several pseudonyms. In his young adult days he worked as a peripatetic female impersonator performer known as "Slats". He was called Jerry Palmer when the silent film era ended in the late 1920s with the first Sound film. He was a voiceover artist for actors whose voices did not fit well in 'talkies'. He was Ned Palmer during the Great Depression, a migrant fruit picker.
Lindsay Rhodes (born December 31, 1976), previously known as Lindsay Soto, is an American sportscaster, journalist, and television personality who was a host and reporter for the NFL Network.
Lindsay Overman-Soto graduated from El Toro High School in Lake Forest, California in 1994, where she was the sports editor for her high school yearbook. She graduated from the University of Southern California in 1998 and interned both at the USC Athletic Department and at Fox Sports Net while attending college majoring in broadcast journalism. Her first job was at an ABC affiliate in Yakima, Washington doing weekend sports and weekday news reporting. Soto later moved to KKFX, a Fox affiliate in Santa Barbara, California where she worked as a weekday sports anchor.
Matthew Lyn Lillard (born January 24, 1970) is an American actor, voice actor, director, and producer. His early film work includes Chip Sutphin in Serial Mom (1994), Emmanuel "Cereal Killer" Goldstein in Hackers (1995), Stu Macher in Scream (1996), Stevo in SLC Punk! (1998), Brock Hudson in She's All That (1999), and Billy Brubaker in Summer Catch (2001). He played Shaggy Rogers in two live action Scooby-Doo movies, Scooby-Doo (2002) and Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed (2004), and in animation, he has been the voice of Shaggy since Casey Kasem retired from the role in 2009.
Lillard's later film roles include Jerry Conlaine in Without a Paddle (2004), Dez Howard in The Groomsmen (2006), Joey in Home Run Showdown (2012), and Jack Rusoe in Return to Nim's Island (2013). While much of his work is comedic in nature, Lillard has also given dramatic performances in movies such as The Descendants (2011), Trouble with the Curve (2012), Match (2014), and Twin Peaks: The Return (2017). He made his directorial debut with the coming-of-age drama Fat Kid Rules the World (2012). Since 2018, Lillard also stars as Dean Boland in the television series Good Girls.
Patricia Carmody "Pat" Bates (born December 15, 1939) is an American Republican politician currently serving in the California State Senate, representing the 36th Senate district, which encompasses parts of Orange and San Diego counties. She served as the Senate's minority leader from 2017 to 2019. She previously served as a member of the Orange County Board of Supervisors from 2007 to 2014, and the California State Assembly from 1998 to 2004. She also served as the first mayor of Laguna Niguel, California following its incorporation in 1989, and continued to serve on the city council until 1998. Before serving as mayor, she had been employed as a social worker in Los Angeles County.
Phyllis Ann Love (December 21, 1925 - October 30, 2011) was an American theater and television actress.
Love was born in Des Moines, Iowa. Her parents were Jack Love, who owned a food market, and Lois Love, who owned a cafe prior to marriage. Her schooling came at Perkins Elementary School, Callanan Junior High School, and Theodore Roosevelt High School in Des Moines. Beginning in 1948, she attended the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh for an unknown length of time.
Rick Yutaka Fowler (born December 13, 1988) is an American professional golfer who plays on the PGA Tour. He was the number one ranked amateur golfer in the world for 36 weeks in 2007 and 2008. On January 24, 2016 he reached a career high fourth in the Official World Golf Ranking following his victory in the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship.
Born and raised in Murrieta, California, Fowler attended Murrieta Valley High School. For years, he played only on a driving range and is almost entirely self-taught. In his senior year in high school, Fowler won the SW League Final with a total score of 64-69=133 and led his team to the state final in 2007.
After high school, he attended Oklahoma State University in Stillwater. He posted his first collegiate victory at the Fighting Illini Invitational hosted by the University of Illinois on October 1, 2007, by shooting a 203 (70-63-70) to win the tournament by one stroke.
Royce Oliver Lewis (born June 5, 1999) is an American professional baseball shortstop in the Minnesota Twins organization. He was drafted by the Twins first overall in the 2017 Major League Baseball draft.
Lewis attended JSerra Catholic High School in San Juan Capistrano, California. As a junior, he was the Los Angeles Times high school baseball player of the year after hitting .429 with four home runs. During the Summer in 2016, he played in the Under Armour All-American Game at Wrigley Field and the Perfect Game All-American Classic at Petco Park, and was named MVP of both games. Lewis played mostly third base and outfield his first three years of high school before moving to shortstop for his senior year.
Lewis was considered one of the top prospects for the 2017 Major League Baseball draft. He committed to the University of California, Irvine to play college baseball. He was named California's Baseball Gatorade Player of the Year in 2017 after batting .377 with four home runs and 25 stolen bases as a senior.
Victoria Loren Kelly (born December 14, 1992) is an American singer, songwriter, actress, and record producer. Kelly first gained recognition after posting videos on YouTube as a teenager, and made it through to Hollywood week on the ninth season of American Idol in 2010. Thereafter, she independently released her self-produced debut EP in 2012, Handmade Songs by Tori Kelly.
In 2013, after Scooter Braun became her manager, Kelly signed with Capitol Records. Her second EP and first major-label release, Foreword (2013), followed soon after. Kelly's debut studio album Unbreakable Smile (2015) peaked at number two on the Billboard 200 chart in the United States with its lead single, "Nobody Love", marking her first appearance on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
Kelly was nominated for Best New Artist at the 58th Grammy Awards, and voiced Meena in the animated film Sing (2016). Swanepoel was born in Nairobi, Kenya. Steven "Steve Tiberius" Gibson (born 26 March 1955) is an American software engineer, security researcher, and IT security proponent. In the early 1980s, Gibson worked on light pen technology for use with Apple and Atari systems. In 1985, he founded Gibson Research Corporation, best known for its SpinRite software.
Gibson started working on computers as a teenager, and got his first computing job with Stanford University's artificial intelligence lab when he was 15 years old. Gibson writes he studied electrical engineering and computer science at the University of California, Berkeley while the alumni directory shows he did not.
