George Halvorson - CEO, Chairman

Job Titles:
  • CEO
  • Chairman
  • Chairman and CEO of the Institute for InterGroup Understanding
George founded the Institute for InterGroup Understanding to help reduce InterGroup conflict and stress in America, and to offer advice to people who face InterGroup conflicts in other areas of the world. George served as chair of the First 5 Commission for Children and Families for the state of California, and he is the author of four books on intergroup understanding - one on early brain development in children, and seven on health care quality improvement and reform. George has served as CEO for multiple health care delivery systems and financing organizations for more than three decades. George has served on nearly 40 health care delivery and reform, and public policy related boards, commissions, and task forces - and has chaired nearly a dozen of them. He founded the Institute because he believes that issues of InterGroup Understanding will determine the future success (or failure) of our country. He wants to create a resource that will help InterGroup Peace become the culture, the shared commitment, and our functional future reality. George deeply believes we need to save every child, and that we need to collectively achieve the goals, and "do the right things at the right times" to save every child in order to give Peace a chance. George Halvorson is the Chair and CEO of the Institute for InterGroup Understanding. He has served for more than 30 years as CEO of six different health care delivery and financing organizations in the U.S., and he has helped start and run similar organizations in several other countries. Health care organizations served by Halvorson included Kaiser Permanente, where he was Chairman and CEO from 2002 until early 2013, and the Health Partners Health Plan and hospital system where he served for 15 years before moving to Kaiser in 2002. Both Kaiser Permanente and Health Partners are vertically integrated care systems that own both hospitals and clinics, so Halvorson has served as a CEO in functional care systems for a couple of decades. Halvorson served as CEO for three smaller health plans before that time, and he served as a senior officer for the Minnesota Blue Cross plan before actually managing health plans and health systems. Halvorson served for eight years as chairman of the First Five Commission for Children and Families for the State of California - appointed to that position by Governor Jerry Brown and then extended for a year into the administration of Governor Gavin Newsom.
