Bert Hoffmann is Senior Researcher at the GIGA German Institute of Global and Area Studies (Hamburg, Germany) and Head of the GIGA Berlin office. He is also Professor of Political Science at the Freie Universität Berlin. He has published extensively on Latin American issues, especially the political, social and economic transformations of Cuba in the last 20 years. He is a member of the Advisory Committee of the Institut des Amériques (IdA), of the International Advisory Board of the European Review of Latin American and Caribbean Studies (ERLACS) and of the Editorial Board of the Asian Journal of Latin American Studies (AJLAS). He was Acting Director of the GIGA Institute of Latin American Studies from 2011 to 2014.

Marie Laure Geoffray is Professor of Political Science at IHEAL-Sorbonne Nouvelle in Paris and a researcher at the Centro de Estudios sobre las Américas (CREDA). She holds a PhD from Sciences Po (Paris) and was a postdoctoral fellow in the desiguALdades.net project run by the Latein Amerikanisches Institut (Freie Universität Berlin). Since 2017, she has been a member of the Institut Universitaire de France (IUF). She is a specialist in the study of the dynamics of protest in authoritarian contexts and in processes of democratisation. As well as her book Contestar à Cuba, Paris, Dalloz (2012), she had published 15 articles in French, English and Spanish peer-reviewed journals.
