Dr. Bartłomiej Twardowski

Bartłomiej Twardowski is a research team leader at the IDEAS NCBR research institute and a researcher at the Computer Vision Center, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. He earned his Ph.D. in 2018, focusing on recommender systems and neural networks. Following his doctoral studies, he served as an assistant professor at Warsaw University of Technology in the AI group for 1.5 years before deciding to join the Computer Vision Center, UAB, for a post-doctoral program. He has been actively involved in various research projects related to DL/NLP/ML (ranging from 40k to 1.4M). He is a Ramón y Cajal fellow. He has a wide industry experience (more than 15 years), including international companies, e.g., Zalando, Adform, Huawei, Naspers Group (Allegro), as well as helping startups with research projects (Sotrender, Scattered). Throughout his career, he has had the opportunity to publish papers in prestigious conferences such as CVPR (2020, 2 papers), NeurIPS (2020, 2023), ICCV (2021, 2023), ICLR (2023, 2024), and ECIR (2021, 2023). He is a member of ELLIS Society and serves as a reviewer for multiple AI/ML conferences, i.e., AAAI, CVPR, ECCV, ICCV, ICML, and NeurIPS. Currently, his research primarily focuses on lifelong machine learning in computer vision, efficient neural network training, transferability and domain adaptation, as well as information retrieval and recommender systems.

Dr. Kamil Adamczewski

Kamil Adamczewski is a postdoc in the IDEAS NCBR where he supervises doctoral students from two groups: Sustainable Machine Learning For Autonomous Machines and Continual Machine Learning. His interest lie in Computer Vision and Efficient and Interpretable AI with publications in conferences, ICCV, CVPR, ICML, AISTATS, AAAI, CorL, among all. He has worked in the fields of Machine Learning and Computer Vision for over 10 years, obtained PhD from ETH Zurich and Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems in Tubingen, Master's degree in Computer Science from University of Oxford and in Computer Engineering from Seoul National University. He has got Bachelor's degree in Mathematics (Number Theory) from Dartmouth College, USA. He was a Research Engineer in Samsung Electronics, Seoul, Korea, and Amazon Germany, and consultant in reinforcement learning and natural language processing for start-ups in the fields of Education, Computer Graphics and Cryptocurrencies. He is a member of ELLIS Society which is an association of experts in the field of artificial intelligence.

Dr. Krzysztof Walas

Krzysztof Walas graduated from Poznan University of Technology (PUT) in Poland, obtaining an MSc in Automatic Control and Robotics. He received a PhD in Robotics in 2012 (with honors) for his thesis on legged robot locomotion in structured environments. He completed his Postdoc at The University of Birmingham, School of Computer Science, Intelligent Robotics Laboratory. He is a recipient of the LIDER project from the National Center for Research and Development and was a Principal Investigator (PI) in the THING project on subterranean legged locomotion within Horizon 2020. He also serves as a PI in the REMODEL project on deformable object manipulation within Horizon 2020. Presently, he holds the position of Assistant Professor at the Institute of Robotics and Machine Intelligence at PUT, Poland and leader of the Physical Interaction Robotics research team at IDEAS NCBR. His research interests revolve around robotic perception for physical interaction, applied to both walking and grasping tasks. ELLIS Society member.

Dr. Łukasz Kuciński

Łukasz Kuciński is an Assistant Professor at the Institute of Mathematics of the Polish Academy of Sciences, a Senior Research Scientist at IDEAS NCBR, and a Member of the ELLIS Society. His ambition is to design and implement AI agents that can learn to solve problems autonomously in a self-improvement manner. His research is published at CORE A* conferences, such as NeurIPS and ICLR, and covers machine learning and sequential decision-making topics, including reinforcement learning, planning, game theory, automated theorem proving, or alignment of large language models. Prior to his current roles, he worked at the Polish Financial Supervision Authority as Vice-Director, where he led a risk modeling team. He obtained a master's degree from the Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics, and Mechanics of the University of Warsaw and a Ph.D. in mathematics from the Polish Academy of Sciences.

Grażyna Żebrowska

Grażyna Żebrowska is a graduate of applied physics at the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry of the University of Gdańsk. She obtained her doctorate in the application of physical sciences in medicine at the University of Rennes in France and at the University of Gdańsk. In the years 2003-2019, she worked as an advisor for science, technology and higher education at the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Washington, USA. She was responsible for initiating and organizing cooperation between Polish and American scientific and academic institutions. She was also involved in promoting Polish universities and research units in the United States. From 2019, she headed the Department of International Cooperation at the Ministry of Science and Higher Education. In the years 2020-2022, she served as the Director General of the National Agency for Academic Exchange.

Prof. Bartosz Zieliński

Job Titles:

Bartosz Zieliński is the leader of the "Sustainable machine learning for autonomous machines" research team at IDEAS NCBR and an associate professor at Jagiellonian University. He obtained his master's degree at UJ in 2007, his Ph.D. at IPPT PAN in 2012, and his habilitation at Wrocław University of Science and Technology in 2023, all in Computer Science. He is a member of ELLIS Society and the author of numerous publications at top machine learning conferences. His research interests revolve around computer vision, deep neural networks, as well as interpretable and sustainable artificial intelligence.

Prof. Ewa Szczurek

Prof. Ewa Szczurek is the co-director of the Institute of AI for Health at Helmholtz Munich, Germany (from Feb 2024), and leads joint labs at Helmholtz Munich and at the Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Mechanics of the University of Warsaw, Poland. She was a visiting associate professor at Northwestern University in the United States (2023) and a visiting fellow at the Center for Interdisciplinary Research, Bielefeld, Germany (2016). She holds Master degrees in computer science from the University of Warsaw, Poland and Uppsala University, Sweden. She obtained her doctoral degree from the Max Planck Institute for Molecular Genetics in Berlin (2011), followed by a postdoctoral fellowship in Switzerland at ETH Zurich. Prof. Szczurek was a recipient of the distinction, scientific and didactic awards from the Rector of the University of Warsaw, as well as ETH Zurich and IMPRS fellowships for her postdoctoral and doctoral research. She acts as a program committee member for the ISMB and RECOMB-CCB conferences, as well as associate editor for Genome Biology. Her research focuses on artificial intelligence, in particular probabilistic graphical models and deep generative models, and their applications in computational medicine. Her specific applications include oncology, pulmonology and the AI-driven design of antimicrobial peptides, a work for which she was recently awarded the ERC Consolidator grant.

Prof. Piotr Miłoś

Piotr Miłoś - mathematician and computer scientist, associate professor at the Polish Academy of Sciences, and member of the ELLIS Society. He is the leader of a research team at IDEAS NCBR and a researcher at the Institute of Mathematics of the Polish Academy of Sciences. He gained experience conducting research at the Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics, and Mechanics of the University of Warsaw, as well as at the University of Bath and in Geneva. He is a graduate of the Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics, and Mechanics at the University of Warsaw. His scientific interests encompass the development of intelligent algorithms that will support decision-making in scenarios involving multiple steps. This is an interdisciplinary area that combines many fields of machine learning, such as planning and learning, multitask and continual learning, sequential modelling using transformers, and reinforcement learning.

Prof. Piotr Sankowski - President

Piotr Sankowski is a professor at the Institute of Informatics, University of Warsaw, where he received his habilitation in 2009 and where he received a doctorate in computer science in 2005. His research interest focuses on practical application of algorithms, ranging from economic applications, through learning data structures, to parallel algorithms for data science. In 2009, Piotr Sankowski received also a doctorate in physics in the field of solid state theory at the Polish Academy of Sciences. In 2010 he received ERC Starting Independent Researcher Grant, in 2015 ERC Proof of Concept Grant, in 2017 ERC Consolidator Grant and in 2023 another ERC Proof of Concept grant. He is the president of IDEAS NCBR - a research and development center operating in the field of artificial intelligence and digital economy - and leader of its research group "Intelligent Algorithms and Data Structures". Piotr Sankowski is also a co-founder of the spin-off company MIM Solutions.

Prof. Tomasz Trzciński

Tomasz Trzciński (DSc, WUT'20; PhD, EPFL'14; MSc, UPC/PoliTo'10), Director of ELLIS Unit Warsaw, is an Associate Professor at Warsaw University of Technology, where he leads the Computer Vision Lab. He is the leader of "Zero-waste Machine Learning in Computer Vision" research group at IDEAS NCBR. He was an Associate Professor at Jagiellonian University of Krakow in years 2020-2023, and a Visiting Scholar at Stanford University in 2017 and at Nanyang Technological University in 2019. Previously, he worked at Google in 2013, Qualcomm in 2012 and Telefónica in 2010. He is an Associate Editor of IEEE Access and MDPI Electronics and frequently serves as a reviewer in major computer science conferences (CVPR, ICCV, ECCV, NeurIPS, ICML) and journals (TPAMI, IJCV, CVIU). He is a Senior Member of IEEE, member of ELLIS Society, member of the ALICE Collaboration at CERN and an expert of National Science Centre and Foundation for Polish Science. He is a Chief Scientist at Tooploox and a co-founder of Comixify, a technology startup focused on using machine learning algorithms for video editing.

Tomasz P. Michalak

Tomasz P. Michalak is the head of the research team at IDEAS NCBR and a lecturer at the Faculty of Mathematics, Computer Science and Mechanics of the University of Warsaw. During his academic career, he conducted research at the Department of Computer Science at the University of Oxford, at the School of Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Southampton, at the Department of Computer Science at the University of Liverpool and at the Department of Applied Economics at the University of Antwerp. He is a graduate of the Faculty of Economic Sciences at the University of Warsaw. He received his PhD in economics from the Faculty of Applied Economics of the University of Antwerp. Member of ELLIS Society. His research interests include artificial intelligence, social networks, fintech and cybersecurity, computational social sciences, multi-agent systems and game theory. Currently, he conducts research on applications of game theory in networks and issues related to security and machine learning.

Wojciech Kruszyński

Wojciech Kruszyński is a graduate of the Faculty of Power and Aeronautical Engineering of the Warsaw University of Technology and the National School of Public Administration. He held positions on supervisory boards and management boards of capital companies, including Winiary S.A., Rafineria Trzebinia S.A., Tetra System Polska S.A. For many years he was associated with the telecommunications sector, including Telekomunikacja Polska S.A. He was the president of the management board of Arcus S.A., Telprojekt Sp. z o.o. and Hyperion S.A.
