Michigan was a pioneer in giving families greater ability to save for college tax-free through 529 savings accounts. Federal law now lets Michigan families use their 529 accounts to help pay for elementary and secondary school tuition. Congress approved this expansion through the December 2017 federal Tax Cuts and Jobs Act.
