Ava Schuster

Ava holds an LLB in International and European Law from the University of Groningen and is currently pursuing an LLM in International and Transnational Criminal Law at the University of Amsterdam. Before joining the Rethinking SLIC* team, Ava interned at the German headquarters of Amnesty International in Berlin.

Cleo Hoetmer

Job Titles:

Cleo Hoetmer holds an LLM from the Vrije Universiteit of Amsterdam. She is, in addition to her research activities, currently working as a teacher of law. Before this Cleo worked as a lawyer for several years. Furthermore Cleo is the vice-chairman of the Objections Committee of municipality De Bilt.

Göran Sluiter

Göran Sluiter is professor of international criminal law at the University of Amsterdam. He is also professor of criminal law and procedure at the Open University in the Netherlands and a lawyer and partner at Prakken d'Oliveira Human Rights Lawyers. He studied law at the University of Maastricht (1996) and obtained his PhD in international criminal law at Utrecht University (2002). He joined the University of Amsterdam as a senior lecturer in (international) criminal law in 2004 and became professor in international criminal law in 2006. Göran is the principal investigator in the VICI-funded research project 'Rethinking the Outer Limits of Secondary Liability for International Crimes and Serious Human Rights Violations' which runs from September 2018 until September 2024. Between 2006 and 2011, he was the principal investigator in the VIDI-funded research project 'International criminal procedure - In search of General Rules and Principles'.

Jindan-Karena Mann

Jindan-Karena Mann is an American lawyer admitted to the State Bar of California. She holds a BA from UC Berkeley in Development Studies with a specific focus on access to natural resources by marginalised societies, a JD from the University of Southern California, and an LLM in International Criminal Law from the University of Amsterdam with a certificate in International Criminal Law from Columbia Law School. Prior to joining Rethinking SLIC*, Jindan worked as a lawyer in the areas of international criminal law and international human rights law. UvA profile page

Joëlle Trampert

Job Titles:

Joëlle Trampert studied law at the University of Amsterdam. After obtaining her Master's degree in Public International Law in 2015, she completed an internship with the Trial Chamber of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia and various internships with law firms in the Netherlands. Prior to joining Rethinking SLIC*, she was employed at the Court of Justice of the European Union in Luxembourg, where she undertook comparative legal research for the Court's ongoing legal terminology projects.

Marc Tiernan

Marc Tiernan holds an LLB from Trinity College Dublin (2014) and an LLM in International Criminal Law from the University of Amsterdam (cum laude, 2017). Prior to joining Rethinking SLIC*, Marc worked as a legal consultant with a defence team at the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia and as a research assistant with the UN Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions. Marc also has experience working with law firms and non-profits in Ireland, Cambodia, and the United States.

Nancy Combs - Chairman

  • Ernest W. Goodrich Professor of Law
Nancy Combs is the Ernest W. Goodrich Professor of Law and the Director of the Human Security Law Center at William & Mary Law School. She graduated first in her class from Berkeley Law School and received her Ph.D. from Leiden University. Professor Combs has served as a law clerk on the U.S Supreme Court and a legal adviser to the Iran-US Claims Tribunal. She has written extensively on international criminal justice, publishing two books and dozens of articles and essays.

Nicky Touw

Nicky Touw holds a BA in Philosophy from the University of Groningen and an LLB (cum laude) from the University of Amsterdam. After obtaining her LLM in criminal law from the University of Amsterdam in 2014, she worked for several law firms in the Netherlands as a paralegal and later as an attorney specializing in financial and corporate criminal law.

Tomas Hamilton

Tomas Hamilton holds a BA (Hons) from the University of Oxford, an LLB from the London College of Law, an LLM from the University of Cambridge, and a PhD in Law from King's College London. Prior to joining Rethinking SLIC*, Tomas worked for the United Nations Assistance to the Khmer Rouge Trials (UNAKRT) at the Extraordinary Chambers in the Court of Cambodia (ECCC), in judicial chambers at the International Criminal Court (ICC), and at a leading criminal law firm in London. Tomas draws on over 10 years of experience in criminal law and human rights for his academic research into secondary liability, with a specific interest in the arms trade. His forthcoming book entitled ‘The Arms Trade and International Criminal Law' explores how the legal cultures of international justice have prioritised the prosecution of military and political figures to the exclusion of commercial actors.
