After battling the U.S Department of Justice for almost 5 years, Mr. Garcia won his landmark case making him the first undocumented person in the nation, in the history of our nation, to be authorized to practice law while undocumented. Mr. Garcia was sworn in as the nation's first undocumented attorney on February 1, 2014, on the steps of the Capitol building in California. Mr. Garcia was surrounded by friends, family, and members of the local, national and international press.
Sergio Covarrubias Garcia was born on March 1, 1977, to Salvador Covarrubias and Albertina Garcia in the State of Michoacán, Mexico. At the age of 17 months, he was brought to the United States by his parents. After about 8 years, his family decided to move back to Mexico. By that time, Sergio had forgotten to speak Spanish.
