Mr Steve Davies

Job Titles:
  • Inclusion Manager
After a short spell as a professional and semi professional footballer (mainly in the North and later on in Holland) I graduated from Lancaster university and then worked for a short time with adults teaching basic literacy and numeracy skills in Liverpool where I am from. I moved to London to train to teach primary children in the late 80s and then worked in Lewisham as primary teacher and then Deputy Head Teacher. I worked in Tower Hamlets and then became the Head Teacher of the school in Lewisham where my career had begun. I moved after 12 years as Head there to a position of Executive Head Teacher across two schools in Sheerness on the Isle of Sheppey and after spending 5 years there I moved back to London to become Head Teacher of a large primary in Redbridge where I have loved being for the last 5 years of my career. In August 2023, after loving it for 21 years, I retired as a Head Teacher and was delighted to find my current part time role doing what I love ie Special needs and inclusion, at Smarden Primary school. I love being here and to quote my wife : "Well retirement didn't last long did it?!!" I have 3 amazing grown up children who I am immensely proud of and I live in Wateringbury with my wife Gill and our dog Archie. When I am not enjoying being at Smarden I work on my allotment, coach other leaders in schools in Kent and London and volunteer at an all through special school in Maidstone as a governor. I love to cycle on my road bike and watch my beloved Tranmere Rovers when there is any spare time.

Mr Thomas Dixon

Job Titles:
  • SCITT Teacher Trainee
Hello, my name is Thomas Dixon and I am currently completing my SCITT year as a trainee teacher. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to do this at Smarden School, with which I have a long association as a parent and governor. I am training across the 7 to 14 age range, meaning that I have the opportunity to teach in both primary and secondary schools. For the first part of this school year I taught mathematics in a secondary school, teaching maths classes in years 7, 8, and 9. I have particular interests in maths, history, art, emotions, and wellbeing. Prior to training as a school teacher I was a university academic, working as a Professor of History at Queen Mary University of London. This involved writing books and making podcasts and BBC radio programmes about the history of emotions, and working with TKAT to develop a series of lessons about emotions for primary schools. I live a few miles away from Smarden with my wife, two boys, and two cats. I love walking in the countryside, music, cooking, and photography.

Mrs C Speight

  • Office Manager

Mrs Claudia Miller

Job Titles:
  • Headteacher
  • Music Lead
  • Overall Curriculum Leader
  • Science Leader
My name is Claudia Miller and it has been my dream for many years to lead a school like Smarden. I graduated from Leeds University with a degree in Russian and went to work for Her Majesty's Diplomatic Service. I travelled to Ethiopia and Kenya and had many exciting adventures before having my first son Alex when I was 25. I went into teaching as a second career after ten years as a busy Mum of six children. My daughter with special needs was treated very badly at her primary school; I found the system so hard and her school wouldn't listen, nobody would teach her to read; I got angry and wanted to do it better. So I became a teacher, and then a Senco, and then a Headteacher. I am still trying, to this day, to make the educational system the very best it can be for every child, no matter their ability, and to ensure that every parent is listened to. I remarried three days before I started at Smarden and now have 10 children, 2 dogs, 3 cats, and 2 guinea pigs. In my rare spare time, I like walking my dogs with my husband and going to Wales.

I graduated from Winchester University and after some travel adventures, settled in Watford where I met my husband and spent my first few years teaching. Originally from Kent, we moved back home to raise our young family, where I took a break from teaching to focus on running my childminding business. I'm now loving being back in a school environment and working as part of a wonderful team. I am a proud mum of two girls and when away from work, I enjoy family dog walks, reading and exploring new places. I am looking forward to teaching Donaldson Class one day/week as well as being the TA in the class for the rest of the week.

I have long harboured a love for the village and its community and feel honoured to be at the heart of that by being a part of the school. My younger siblings both attended Smarden primary after our move from Essex in 2007 and I immediately fell in love with the kind, nurturing and encouraging environment.
