Brian Murphy - VP

Brian Murphy is vice president of patient access at Hebrew Rehabilitation Center. In this role, he is responsible for managing admissions for 750+ beds across multiple campuses and levels of care. Brian receives more than 9,000 referrals annually as the result of the strong relationships he and his team have built with all of the acute-care hospitals and other referring facilities in HRC's service area. Brian joined Hebrew SeniorLife in 2006 and has more than 20 years of experience in the rehabilitation and long term care industry. Prior to his current position, he worked in marketing and public relations at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital in Boston, admissions and marketing at Heatherwood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Newport, Rhode Island, and in medical billing at The Boston Center in West Roxbury, Mass.

Alvaro Pascual-Leone, MD, PhD, is Medical Director of the Deanna and Sidney Wolk Center for Memory Health and a Senior Scientist at the Hinda and Arthur Marcus Institute for Aging Research at Hebrew SeniorLife, and a Professor of Neurology at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Pascual-Leone is an international leader in the study and modulation of human cortical plasticity and a pioneer in the use of noninvasive brain stimulation and its application for the study of brain behavior relations and the development of diagnostic and therapeutic interventions in neuropsychiatry. An overarching goal has been the development of translational approaches to characterize and modulate brain activity to help patients with debilitating neuropsychiatric disorders while gaining fundamental insights into human brain function. A major focus of Dr. Pascual-Leone's research is on maintenance of brain health across the lifespan. Dr. Pascual-Leone brought together a group of international investigators and funding partners to establish the Barcelona Brain Health Initiative, a multiyear, longitudinal effort supported by La Caixa and Institut Guttmann that aims at identifying markers of brain health across the lifespan and developing and testing multimodal interventions and lifestyle changes that sustain brain health and prevent age-related cognitive decline. Dr. Pascual-Leone leads this one-of-a-kind study as its scientific director. At Hebrew SeniorLife, Dr. Pascual-Leone also sees patients as a cognitive neurologist and the medical director at the Wolk Center for Memory Health, where the focus is on comprehensive, patient-centered, personalized care and multi-disciplinary, holistic support of individuals with cognitive decline, their families, and caregivers. Dr. Pascual-Leone established and directs the Sidney Baer Jr. Fellowship in Clinical Neurosciences, training the future leaders of medical brain sciences, working in the interface of neurology and psychiatry. He also established and directs a training program in noninvasive brain stimulation that has trained over 1,000 clinicians from around the world. Previously, Dr. Pascual-Leone founded and directed for over 20 years the Berenson-Allen Center for Non-Invasive Brain Stimulation, and served as Chief of the Division of Cognitive Neurology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and as the Associate Dean of Clinical and Translational Research and Program Director of Harvard Catalyst at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Pascual-Leone has authored over 750 scientific papers and several books and is listed as an inventor on several patents. His work is highly regarded for its innovation and quality and is highly cited (h-index 165; i10-index 626). Dr. Pascual-Leone has been recognized by Thomson Reuters as a one of the world's top 15 neuroscientists and one of the "World's Most Influential Scientific Minds." In 2022 Research.com, a prominent academic platform for scientists, ranked him #10 in worldwide in neuroscience. He has been honored with many international awards, and is an elected member of the Spanish Royal Academy of Science (Pharmacy). His work has also gained wide general public appeal and outreach through dissemination in the lay press, television and radio, and several books (e.g. Norman Doidge's The Brain That Changes Itself; and John E. Robison's Switched On). Most recently Dr. Pascual-Leone co-authored, with A. Fernandez and D. Bartres-Faz, El Cerebro que Cura (2019). Eran Metzger

Eran Metzger, M.D., has been on staff in the Medical Department at Hebrew SeniorLife since 1998; first as the associate director, and subsequently as medical director of psychiatry in 2011. Dr. Metzger received his Bachelor of Science from Haverford College and Doctor of Medicine from Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine. He completed his transitional residency at Brockton Hospital, and his residency in psychiatry at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. He completed his fellowship in consultation-liaison psychiatry at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. Dr. Metzger is certified in psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. He has been an assistant professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School since 2003. Eric Rogers

Eric Rogers joined Hebrew SeniorLife in 2012 and was named chief information officer in July 2016. Eric brings 25 years of Health Care-focused information and technology experience to the organization. He provides strategic and tactical planning, development, evaluation, implementation, and coordination of HSL's IT systems that serve the organization's multiple health care and senior living locations, as well as the Hinda and Arthur Marcus Institute for Aging Research in Boston. He is responsible for coordination, facilitation, and consultation with staff on information systems, electronic communications, telecom, and information security and technology initiatives. Prior to his role as CIO, Eric served as HSL's director of applications, reporting, and health information management. Before joining HSL, he held leadership positions at Beacon Partners, Weymouth, Mass., UMass Memorial Medical Center, Worcester, Mass., and The Valley Hospital, Ridgewood, New Jersey.

Ernest Mandel

Ernest Mandel, M.D. is Medical Director of the Medically Acute Care Unit and Medical Director of Nephrology at Hebrew SeniorLife, where he has been on staff since 2012. He received his Bachelor of Arts magna cum laude in Chemistry from Harvard University, his medical degree with honors and distinction from Yale University, and his Master of Science in epidemiology from Harvard School of Public Health. He completed his residency in internal medicine at Yale-New Haven Hospital, where he was also chief resident. He then completed a fellowship in nephrology at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital. He is on staff at Brigham and Women's Hospital where he serves as associate program director of the Brigham and Women's Hospital/Massachusetts General Hospital Joint Nephrology Fellowship Program. He maintains a teaching appointment as an instructor in medicine at Harvard Medical School and is an associate faculty member at Ariadne Labs where his research focuses on serious illness communication with dialysis patients. Heather Andrews

Prior to joining the Deanna and Sidney Wolk Center for Memory Health, Heather served as the Life Enrichment Specialist within the memory care unit at Mount Desert Island Hospital's Birch Bay Village and worked as a Research Assistant within the Cognition, Aging, Resiliency, and Enhancement (CARE) Lab and Maine Mood Lab at the University of Maine. Heather presented on mindfulness associations with executive function and well-being in older adults at the 2021 International Neuropsychological Society conference and the National Academy of Neuropsychology conference. Heather holds a degree in Psychology from the University of Maine where she graduated summa cum laude with a Faculty Research Award. In addition to her role at the Wolk Center, Heather is a Research Associate at the Hinda and Arthur Marcus Institute for Aging Research and maintains membership in the International Neuropsychological Society and Society for Clinical Neuropsychology. She feels privileged to get to know the patients at the Wolk Center and assist them in their journey toward greater health and well-being, and is incredibly motivated by hearing stories of patients and families finding more peace and joy.

Helen Chen

Helen Chen, M.D., joined Hebrew SeniorLife as chief medical officer in August 2013 and is also an assistant professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School. As a geriatrician, Dr. Chen has a passion for improving care for older adults both at the individual and healthcare system levels. Prior to joining Hebrew SeniorLife, Dr. Chen was the chief medical officer for the Center for Elders' Independence, a Program of All-Inclusive Care for Elders, and the director of Geriatrics and Extended Care at the San Francisco VA Medical Center, where she directed clinical geriatrics services across the continuum of care for Veterans residing in northern California. Dr. Chen completed her undergraduate and medical degrees at Brown University, and her medical residency and geriatrics fellowship training at the University of California, San Francisco. She is an alumna of the California Healthcare Foundation's Leadership Fellowship program and is board certified in internal medicine, geriatric medicine, and hospice and palliative medicine. She currently serves on the admissions and readmissions committee of the National Quality Forum and the American Board of Internal Medicine's geriatrics examination subcommittee. Trish Eichinger

Trish Eichinger, LICSW, is a geriatric social worker who has more than 15 years' experience working with seniors and their families, and connecting them with needed community supports and services. Her previous work in geriatric psychiatry provides her with a sharpened recognition of the emotional stress for both patients and caregivers that is often associated with receiving a new cognitive impairment diagnosis. Additionally, her history working in elder protective services allows her to comprehensively assess seniors for potential risks associated with memory loss, and subsequently connect them with supports to alleviate risks. Helping senior patients and their families accept that a diagnosis of cognitive impairment, while obviously upsetting, does not have to be earth-shattering, drives her work at the Wolk Center. She has seen the positive impact when patients are able to recognize that accepting available supports and services can provide a better quality of life for all involved, and helps sustain family caregiver arrangements.
