Dr. William A. Wertheim came to Stony Brook University in 1996, where he led the Medical Consult Service. From 1998 - 2003 Dr. Wertheim served as associate program director and director of the primary care track of the Internal Medicine Residency. From 2003-2012, he served as the residency program director for Internal Medicine, followed by Executive Vice Chair of the Department of Medicine and then Associate Dean for Clinical Outreach. In 2016, Dr. Wertheim assumed the role of Vice Dean for Graduate Medical Education and Designated Institutional Official. In February 2021, he was appointed as interim Dean for the Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University.
Dr. Wertheim attended college at Harvard University and medical school at New York University School of Medicine. He completed his internal medicine residency at University of Michigan Hospitals, where he also served as chief resident. Dr. Wertheim worked as a clinical faculty member at the University of Michigan at the Ann Arbor Veteran's Administration Hospital and in New York at the Brooklyn Hospital Center prior to arriving at Stony Brook. He also received an MBA from the Heller School at Brandeis University in 2019. He has served in a number of positions outside of Stony Brook, including a councilor for the Association of Program Directors of Internal Medicine (APDIM) and has been appointed to serve on New York State's Council on Graduate Medical Education (COGME).
