Marcus (Marc) Sachs serves as Chief Security Officer (CSO) and Board Director of Cyber Nation Central®. In his roles, Mr. Sachs leads all physical and cybersecurity matters at the ecosystem level and advises ecosystem and subsidiary leadership on strategy, vision and execution optimization, including for technology and cybersecurity as well as ecosystem growth optimization. Mr. Sachs is Deputy Director of Auburn University's McCrary Institute for Cyber and Critical Infrastructure Security, and simultaneously serves as the Chief Security Officer (CSO) of Pattern Computer, a startup in the machine learning and artificial intelligence field, where he is responsible for overall corporate security policy and strategy. Previously, he was also a Partner at RIDGE-LANE Limited Partners in the Technology Practice. Mr. Sachs retired from the United States Army after serving a distinguished 20-year career as a Corps of Engineers and Systems Automation Officer. His final assignment was with the Department of Defense's Joint Task Force on Computer Network Defense (JTF-CND), established in 1998 to defend the department's computer networks from foreign intrusions. Following his military retirement, he was appointed by President George W. Bush to serve concurrently on the staff of the National Security Council and on the staff of the President's Critical Infrastructure Protection Board. Mr. Sachs later joined the National Cyber Security Division of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security as the department's first Cyber Director, where he was responsible for developing the implementation plan for the National Strategy to Secure Cyberspace. While at the White House and DHS he proposed and developed the concept and early design for the United States Computer Emergency Response Team (US-CERT). Since leaving military and public service, Mr. Sachs' private sector experience includes serving as the Deputy Director of SRI International's Computer Science Laboratory, as the Vice President for National Security Policy at Verizon Communications, and as the Senior Vice President and Chief Security Officer of the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) where he directed the rebuilding of the Electricity Information Sharing and Analysis Center (E-ISAC). Mr. Sachs volunteered as the Director of the SANS Internet Storm Center from 2003-2010 and has co-authored several books on information security. He holds degrees in civil engineering, computer science and technology commercialization, and is an avid collector of mechanical cipher equipment. He is a licensed Professional Engineer in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
