HELPERS

Helpers is dedicated to supporting Adults with Developmental Disabilities and the Organizations that serve them... Founded in 1953 by Sister Miriam Auxilium O'Gare, to serve adults with Down Syndrome, our organization incorporated and received its 501(c)(3) status in 1958. Helpers Community began raising funds to purchase and operate some of the first group homes for adults with developmental disabilities in the San Francisco Bay Area... In addition to providing residential care, Helpers operated an Activity Center from 1966 until 2003 where the residents developed their craft and sewing skills to create beautiful handmade items. In 1966, Ghirardelli Square invited Helpers to host a weekend bazaar to sell the handmade creations made at Helpers Activity Center, as well as donated items from Helpers' supporters. Helpers hosted pop-up bazaars at Ghirardelli Square until 1974 when Ghirardelli Square offered the in-kind donation of a permanent storefront to Helpers, known as Helpers..
