The William Blyth tile works was originally established in 1840, taking advantage of the abundant deposits of alluvial clay on the banks of the river Humber. When the Brick Tax was abolished in 1850, the tile and brick industry expanded so that by the early 1890s around 20 manufacturers operated in the Barton area, making it the brick and tile capital of Britain...
