Dr Amanda Phoon Nguyen

Dr Amanda Phoon Nguyen has been consulting in the Darwin practice since 2019. She accepts patients for the full range of Oral Medicine, including oral mucosal pathology, salivary gland diseases, temporomandibular disorders, orofacial pain, and dental sleep medicine. Before undertaking specialist training in Oral Medicine at the University of Western Australia, Amanda graduated from the University of Melbourne with a Bachelor of Dental Science, served in the Royal Australian Navy as a Dental officer, and worked in public and private dental practice in Western Australia. Her Oral Medicine training involved roles at the Oral Health Centre of Western Australia, Sir Charles Gairdner's Hospital Head and Neck Cancer Multidisciplinary Team and the Perth Children's Hospital. Amanda has published in and serves as a reviewer for several peer-review journals and is a reviewer of Continuing Professional Development content for the Australian Dental Association. Her research interests include orofacial pain, temporomandibular disorders and paediatric oral medicine. She is Editor of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons (RACDS) College News, holds Membership in the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons (General Stream) and serves as a mentor in the MRACDS program. In 2017, she completed her Certificate of Advanced Dental Leadership. Amanda holds current positions on the ADA WA Dental Continuing Professional Development committee, the Western Australia regional committee for the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons and is Treasurer of the International Association for Dental Research (WA). In her spare time, she volunteers for the Perth Children's Hospital Foundation and the Women in Dentistry Healing Smiles program for domestic violence victims. Dr Leon Smith

Dr Leon Smith is a Specialist Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon with degrees in Medicine and Surgery (University of Melbourne) and Dentistry (University of Western Australia). After completing both dental training and medical and surgical training, Dr Leon Smith completed advanced surgical training in Melbourne and achieved Fellowship with the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons as a Specialist Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon. He also completed post-fellowship training in Orthognathic (corrective jaw) surgery, Facial Trauma Surgery and Head and Neck Surgery. Leon has a special interest in orthognathic (corrective jaw) surgery, oral and craniofacial implantology (including zygoma implants) and facial trauma surgery. Leon was born in Port Hedland (WA) and has a long history of clinical practice in Western Australian and the Northern Territory. He practiced extensively in both general dentistry and medicine prior to completing specialist surgical training. Leon has served as Federal Councillor for the Australian and New Zealand Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. He is actively involved in the training of undergraduate (dental students) and post-graduate (specialist trainees). He has taught at the Dental School at the University of Western Australia and is a consultant at the Royal Perth Hospital, which involves providing on-call surgical services. Leon has 3 children (all boys) and a Hungarian Viszla "Buddy" aka Budman. He enjoys motorbike riding (dirt bikes), and competed in the Kalgoorlie Desert Race in 2020 and the Finke Desert Race in 2021. In 2022, Leon is planning to cross the Simpson Desert on a motorbike!

Dr Michael Hurrell

Dr Michael Hurrell provides care alongside Dr Leon Smith in the Northern Territory. He accepts patients for the full range of oral and maxillofacial services. Dr Michael Hurrell obtained dental, medical and PhD degrees from the University of Queensland and has published research internationally. During his surgical training he has worked at various locations in Queensland and Western Australia, including Royal Brisbane Hospital, Royal Perth Hospital, Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, Perth Children's Hospital and Fiona Stanley Hospital. Michael has a keen interest in all aspects of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, including dental extractions, bone grafting, dental and facial implants, severe facial trauma, corrective jaw surgery, head and neck cancer resection and reconstruction, temporomandibular joint dysfunction, salivary gland disease, cleft lip and palate surgery and obstructive sleep apnoea surgery.
