Dr. Castillo earned his M.A. (2005) and Ph.D (2007) from the Computational and Applied Mathematics department at Rice University. His current research areas include image processing and surface reconstruction from noisy point cloud data. Dr. Castillo also holds an adjunct appointment in the Computational and Applied Mathematics Department at Rice University. Dr. Castillo is also the proud recipient of a 2013 NIH Extramural Loan Repayment Award (NIH LRP).

Dr. Castillo founded the Deformable Image Registration Laboratory as part of his PhD work to validate the use of DIR-based lung function imaging derived from CT. His current research interests include quantitative performance evaluation of deformable image registration, and quantitative function & morphometric image analysis.
Dr. Castillo completed his MS (2007) and PhD degrees (2011) in the Department of Imaging Physics at MD Anderson Cancer Center through the UT Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, and received his initial certification by the American Board of Radiology in 2016.
Dr. Castillo was previously awarded the UT GSBS Aaron Blanchard Award in Medical Physics, an NIH Extramural Loan Repayment Award (NIH LRP), as well as an NIH Research Scientist Development Award (K-01). He is co-investigator on an active NIH/NCI R01 (R01CA200817, PI: Vinogradskiy) evaluating safety and clinical efficacy of functional avoidance radiotherapy based on CT ventilation imaging, and principal investigator on a Winship Invest$ Pilot Grant investigating novel imaging technologies for cardiothoracic toxicity evaluation in radiotherapy. Dr. Castillo is also principal investigator (MPI) on a newly award NIH/NCI Academic Industrial Partnership Grant (R01CA236857).

Dr. Guerra is generally interested in biological problems with an emphasis in biomedical research. Current interests include meta-analysis for genetic linkage studies, case-control studies using haplotype blocks, and identification of multiple genetic markers influencing a single trait. More recently, he has been learning about bioinformatics via macroarray studies and biological pathways. Projects in these areas are motivated by various system biology efforts with University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB, Galveston), Baylor College of Medicine, and M. D. Anderson Cancer Center.
