Tom has assisted organizations on topics including revenue cycle management, operational improvement, practice transformation for value-based payment, mergers and acquisitions, managed care contract negotiation, physician compensation, negotiation of financial and purchasing arrangements, practice formation and start-up, and strategic planning. Tom is a frequent speaker on topics including financial management of healthcare practices, revenue cycle management, quality programs, utilizing data to improve payer contracting, Medicare program changes, and disruption in the healthcare marketplace. In addition, he has been highly involved in leadership positions with many professional and advocacy organizations. He is currently the Immediate Past-President of the Board of Trustees of the Association of Community Cancer Centers (ACCC) and serves on the Government Affairs and Strategic Planning Committees. Tom has also served as the President of the MGMA Assembly of Oncology-Hematology Administrators, the Hematology-Oncology Leadership Network and the Virginia Association of Hematology and Oncology Managers. He has been a member of the Board of the Community Oncology Alliance and has worked closely with numerous organizations on a number of federal and state regulatory and payment issues. Tom entered the healthcare field in 1995 as the Administrator of a large medical oncology practice in Virginia. In this role, Tom transformed a financially challenged group into a stable, growing group that assumed regional leadership in the oncology community. Under Tom's direction, the practice expanded rapidly, opening offices and introducing new and expanded services. Tom's financial expertise has proved invaluable in the oncology field. In 1996, his practice acquired a smaller practice that was experiencing financial problems in their market. They were able to double the practice's collections in a one-year time frame by establishing consistent operational policies and procedures, retraining clinical and clerical employees regarding specific billing and insurance requirements, and renegotiating purchasing and insurance arrangements. This process has been replicated numerous times under Tom's leadership.
