Carola Hoskins

Job Titles:

Carola is the Principal Ecologist of Just Mammals Limited and holds an MSc in Environmental Conservation Management. She has practical expertise with bats, birds, botanical assessments, mammalian and reptile surveys, both in the UK and overseas. Carola has been employed as an hourly paid lecturer with the University of South Wales on overseas field courses and has worked in a Local Biological Records Centre whilst developing a broad range of skills and expertise. As well as assisting in conservation-based research and a number of conservation projects, Carola has carried out biodiversity audits and ecological enquiries. Carola holds NRW licences for otter, bats, white-clawed crayfish and great crested newts. She also holds a NE licence for bats.

Diane Morgan

Diane is a Senior Ecologist and ran the company alongside Phil Morgan for many years. She retired at the end of 2022 and is only finishing specific projects, as well as carrying out evening survey work. She is an experienced bat ecologist of thirty years standing, with an extensive background to surveying built structures - both above and below ground - for bats. She has carried out ringing of Daubenton's bat as part of a multi-year research project on the species and has undertaken monitoring work on several important lesser horseshoe bat roosts and assisted in radio tracking projects on the same species. Prior to her work as a consultant ecologist, Diane was the Director of Brecknock Wildlife Trust and was involved in a wide range of nature conservation work including species and habitat protection and conservation land management. Other areas of interest include otter, dormice, water voles, reptiles, amphibians, fungi and crayfish. Diane holds NE and NRW species licences to work with bats, dormice, great crested newts, otters and water voles. She is an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (ACIEEM).

Grace Dooley

Grace is a Senior Ecologist with Just Mammals Limited and has worked in the ecology sector since 2013. She has experience in surveying for habitats including Phase 1 and NVC, bats, great crested newts, reptiles, birds, dormice, otter and badger, and has managed projects of a variety of scales, from small householder construction projects up to Developments of National Significance. She is an Associate Member of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (ACIEEM). Grace holds survey licences for great crested newt in Wales and England, and a survey licence for bats in Wales including handling and the use of a hand net. She has previously held EPS development licences for a variety of construction projects where bats were found to be present, facilitating the development's progression while maintaining the bats' use of the site post-development. When not working, Grace enjoys ringing church bells, birdwatching and developing her wildlife garden.

Phil Morgan - Founder

Phil Morgan is the founder of the Just Mammals Consultancy and retired at the end of 2020. He still reviews some reports for us as our Assistant Principal Ecologist. Phil has been a professional ecologist for over 30 years, working with engineers and developers throughout that time to ensure that protected species are fully taken into account during any development. Phil has considerable experience of undertaking building, tree and cave surveys for all bat species. In addition he has undertaken foraging and flight line surveys using heterodyne and other echo location equipment and in 1991 made a significant contribution to a Bristol University run project, which established the methodology used in the National Bat Monitoring Programme. Phil has also undertaken numerous radio tracking exercises on both lesser horseshoe and Daubenton's bats. He holds Natural England (NE) and Natural Resources Wales (NRW) licences to work with all bat species. In addition to his experience with bats his background as an ecologist in the water industry means that he has considerable experience with otters and water voles. In 2002 he undertook considerable survey work for otters as part of the Otter Survey of Wales and has also undertaken research projects on otters and water voles, for which he holds appropriate species survey licences. In addition, Phil has considerable experience with both dormice and great crested newts and holds NE and NRW licence with respect to these species. Phil is a Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv), registered with the Society for the Environment and is a Member of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (MCIEEM).

Phil Sutton

Rob Morgan

Robert is an Ecologist with the company and has over ten years' experience with bats, carrying out roost surveys, emergence surveys, radio tracking of lesser horseshoes and monitoring of important sites. Robert has considerable expertise in analysing bat calls recorded the field and identifying the species from the resultant sonograms and holds a NRW licence to disturb all species of bat. He has also supervised numerous projects as an Ecological Clerk of Works, including the demolition of bat roosts and provision of mitigation measures. Robert is also very experienced with respect to dormice, a species he has been working with for over fifteen years and holds an NRW licence to work with the species. He has been monitoring several populations of the species in south and mid-Wales for many years.
