Cassie Pelz

Cassie's interest in the environment and the desire to make a difference in the nature community led her to join BWELL. She enjoys spending time outdoors whether it is hiking, kayaking, or reading a good book in the hammock. She never passes up an opportunity to check out a cool bug or plant while gardening and loves sharing the wonder that is nature with others!

Helen Toledo - President

  • President and Founder of the Buffalo Women of Environmental Learning and Leadership
Helen is the president and founder of the Buffalo Women of Environmental Learning and Leadership (BWELL). She has a B.S. in Environmental Geosciences from the University at Buffalo and holds a M.S. in Great Lakes Environmental Science from SUNY Buffalo State. Helen is an environmental educator who aims to effectively communicate environmental impacts through the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS). She believes that bringing new voices, ideas, and perspectives from within our community is crucial to creating a sustainable and resilient future.

Jordyn Berns

Jordyn is the secretary on the BWELL board. She is currently a senior at UB studying environmental engineering and plans to get her Master's in water resource engineering. She enjoys reading, painting and being in the outdoors. She joined BWELL to connect with other like-minded women who love the environment as much as she does.

Sarah Baillie

Sarah Baillie is a nature nerd who likes finding new hiking trails and spots to kayak along with occasionally trying to birdwatch while running. She enjoys how BWELL brings people out to enjoy the outdoors together.

Wendy Paterson - Treasurer

Job Titles:

Wendy has a master degree in conservation biology from Central Michigan University and bachelor degree in Zoology from SUNY Oswego. She is an animal lover through and through with a particular fondness for the overlooked creatures such as native freshwater mussels, citronella ants, and stinky homeless pibbles (AKA pitbulls). As BWELL's treasurer she uses her year of experience in project management and environmental education to balance the budget and help guide event planning. Math, volunteering, and the outdoors are super fun!
