I've been building coils since 2001. I started with a spark gap coil with plans from a book I bought. It didn't turn out as good or as bad as it could have but it did work so I was happy, until it the transformer died. I was however disappointed in its short run times... I received a bad shock off the high voltage transformer and attached capacitors. I took a short break from coiling. Later, once I got my internet setup I began researching things and came across a website explaining solid state Tesla Coils. I was very excited because they didn't seem to have any of the shortcomings that the spark gap type did. I researched the idea for months on end. I did not copy any designs but came up with several (failures) of my own until I eventually got a working version which produced 3 foot long, 1 inch thick arcs. With a slow pulse rate. I pushed the coil so hard and eventually killed it. From that point forward I was obsessed with solid state coiling.
