Illuminating coated Rb-vapor cells with visible light, they efficiently dispense Rb atoms from their inner surfaces. The desorption occurs much faster if gold nanoparticles form the coating. This novel kind of coating exploits the plasmonic absorption of Au-NPs to transduce electromagnetic energy into localized thermal energy very efficiently. The process causes the desorption of Rb atoms near the NPs, whose small size is also responsible for the fast response time.
