Alexander Stemp

Alexander Stemp introduces us to a little known corner of Europe that is waiting to be discovered. With its beautiful mountains, valleys and forests, the region offers the chance to step back in time and leave the modern world behind. Here you can experience one of the last great wildernesses, where horses and carts still travel the roads and local people still work the land in traditional ways. Alexander Stemp has visited the Ukraine Carpathians on various occasions. He gives a unique glimpse into this still relatively unknown part of Europe and provides information and advice on finding your way around the area, including a number of sample itineraries by bicycle and train.

Alfie Bear goes

Alfie Bear goes to work by Brenda-Gillian and Alfie Brown Alfie Bear is a delightful tale about a little boy who blows out the four candles on his birthday cake and makes a wish. He wishes he could be grown up like Mummy. That night he dreams he is grown up and becomes a farmer. Little did he know what adventures lay in store for him down on the farm.

Ann Petre

Ann Petre was born in 1926 at Langley Hall Farm, Norfolk and lived through some of the most tumultuous decades of the 20th Century, finally settling in Cambridge. You can experience what it was like, to grow up in the care of nannies, be educated by nuns, live through the war, and be a female student at Oxford in the forties. What happens when you make decisions based on passion later in life and have to start all over again - on your own? The story is a window into another traveller's soul, in this often capricious and inexplicable journey through life on which each of us is embarked. Ann relates how she wove her path through those times, losing and finding herself in her unique journey into solitude. In addition to Ann's story, there are two other threads. The first is historical with insights into a family history that includes links to nobility and a family of Britain's early aviation pioneers. The second is the visual story told by photographs from the beginning of the 1900s and concludes with the author's paintings.

Anthony Day

Anthony Day has a keen interest in the social history of his home village of Wicken, Cambridgeshire. Whilst looking for family photographs in the 1960s, he was presented with a collection of pictures taken by Emma Sophia Aspland at the turn of the 20th century. Over the years, he has added more images to his collection and shares them with us here. Anthony was moved by Emma's awareness of what was likely to disappear. She loved her thatched cottages and farmhouses, so many of which had vanished before Anthony was born. She loved portraiture and the ancient trades dependent on the fen. Emma appears to be shy and self-conscious, unlike the subjects she encouraged to be photographed.

Barry Aldridge

Barry Aldridge was moved to find out more about the brave men and women stationed at RAF Witchford and RAF Mepal when he got involved with organising the War Years exhibition in Ely Museum. His passion led to the excavation of the Lancaster bomber at Coveney. And so started a journey of research, amazing discoveries and new friendships around the world. Sadly, Barry became too unwell to complete the book, but his wife, Sue took over the flame to complete his absorbing account of local history.

It is beautifully illustrated throughout with Joss's sketches and watercolours of her adorable four year old smooth haired dachshund, Little Fen.

Kate Hadley

The free pictures in this catalogue are also available at high resolution on request from Kate Hadley, sometimes up to 4 megapixels. This has been done to provide people with a decent image to use in print, film and posters, facilitate their work and remove the problem of cost. I will be happy to send you higher resolution pictures and attributions, but would ask that attributions are used in a way that honours collectors and the academics who have given this project their time and expertise. Kate Hadley has done a remarkable job in first assembling this collection and then preparing the catalogue which is both user-friendly and erudite and will be a valuable addition to the academic world in a wider sphere and to people and schools within the area. I think that all the archaeologists, including the distinguished Michael Green have enjoyed working on this project because the finds are fascinating, but not least because Kate is a good colleague. The Romans were like us in many ways and this fascinating catalogue both entertains and informs us with some of the secrets from the ancient world.
