Alan O'Rourke

Alan is a Board Director and is jointly responsible for our Glasgow Office undertaking the lead Director role on major projects. Alan graduated with a degree in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, joining Hulley & Kirkwood in 2000 where he continued to develop his inter-disciplinary technical design skills. Alan also gained a post-graduate Masters in Construction Law and has acted as an Expert Witness and served clients in adjudication. He has a strong and pragmatic approach to decision making which is built on his background in both mechanical and electrical engineering design on major projects. Alan has a broad range of experience having worked in both our Birmingham and Glasgow offices, leading projects covering a wide range of sectors, including Education, Healthcare and Commercial. In addition, Alan is responsible for our Defence portfolio and has a wealth of experience across the sector. I hold the view that achieving project success hinges on accurately defining the project's brief and then employing innovative and rigorous design approaches. Developing robust MEP designs and then ensuring they are installed and commissioned effectively are crucial in delivering buildings that ultimately fulfil their intended objectives.

Allan West

Job Titles:

Allan joined our Glasgow Team in 1997 as an Engineer, having previously worked in heavy engineering as well as in a local authority property division. He has progressed naturally through the Business to Mechanical Director in 2017, thereby broadening his responsibilities to more strategic technical and business focussed activities. Allan's experience is equally diverse in terms of sector spread and project size and value. He has been involved in Mechanical Building Services Design across a wide range of sectors including Higher Education, Healthcare, Retail, Residential, Leisure, MOD/Government Agency, Commercial and Industrial. Allan has successfully led many of the large, complex and prestigious projects that have been designed and delivered by the Glasgow office. His attention to detail, problem solving and collaborative working abilities are key assets. As an alumnus, he was delighted to support Glasgow Caledonian University as an External Examiner on the BEng (Hons) Building Services Engineering for a four-year tenure from 2017 to 2021. The Climate Emergency has or will touch all our lives to some degree. I think our profession presents a truly unique opportunity to tangibly reduce harmful emissions directly or indirectly associated with the built environment. The challenge is huge and the targets ambitious. On every project and commission we seek and identify performance improvements to better shape our future.

Colin Lindsay - CFO

Colin joined the Head Office team in 2004 to lead our Finance function. As part of the Executive Board he contributes to both strategic and operational matters for the Business. He is responsible for all financial aspects of the Business, aligning the commercial and economic strategy as well as managing business improvement initiatives within the group. With over 30 years experience across a range of industries, Colin joined the Board in 2021. He provides strategic and financial guidance to ensure the company's financial commitments and responsibilities are met, developing company policies and procedures to ensure the sound financial management and control of the business.

Colin Peacock

Colin graduated in Environmental Engineering in 1993 and joined Hulley & Kirkwood in 1996 and has progressed through the company to Mechanical Director in 2021. Based in our Glasgow Office, Colin has more than 30 years' experience in building services consultancy and is responsible for the management and delivery of projects across a wide range of sectors for Glasgow and across the Business. His main focus has been Healthcare where he has taken the lead role in the delivery of numerous acute hospital and specialist healthcare projects. Colin takes a ‘hands on' approach to project delivery and pragmatic approach to decision making with a background based on real site experience. Colin has contributed to the development of our Graduate Training Programme which was launched in May 2023.

Craig McDade

Craig is an Electrical Director with 20 years' experience in building services consultancy. Based in our Glasgow Office he leads the delivery of electrical design services on local and national projects across a range of sectors, including Healthcare, Transport, Stadia, Education and Commercial. Craig graduated with a degree in Electronic and Electrical Engineering in 2003, initially working on a mixture of residential and industrial projects in London before joining Hulley & Kirkwood in 2004. As an Electrical Director Craig shares his electrical expertise across the company having developed an in-depth knowledge of specialist electrical design standards including electrical infrastructure resilience, standby generation and ICT architecture. His major project experience includes many District General Hospitals, Stadia and Arenas. Craig has also been an early adopter of Building Information Modelling and has supported on the implementation and development of BIM within the business.

Dean Marley

Dean is a Mechanical Director with more than 30 years' experience in building services consultancy. Based in our Plymouth Office, he supports the operations of the office and undertakes a lead role in project delivery. Dean is responsible for the management and delivery of our design services on projects from inception through to aftercare. This gives him a rounded appreciation of all aspects of stakeholders' needs and very broad skill set. Dean has extensive experience in the building services industry having worked in a variety of areas including Local Government, Private Practice and Contracting. Through this experience Dean has developed design and practical skills across most private and public sectors. Dean is a team player with a ‘hands on' approach providing technical support for Mechanical Engineers across the business. I believe effective team work and collaboration within the project delivery process is essential to its successful completion and operation. You are only as good as your last project and all projects require a different set of skills to ultimately meet the Clients requirements. Understanding the brief, developing practical designs and attention to detail are essential to the project delivery.

Gordon McInnes

Gordon is a Board Director with 35 years' experience in building services consultancy, based in our Epsom office, he manages the operations of the office and undertakes the lead Director role on all major projects. Gordon forms part of the Executive Team who manage the day-to-day operations of the business, responsible for the leadership and strategic growth of the company. Gordon joined Hulley & Kirkwood as a graduate engineer in 1988, he quickly progressed to running a successful team, delivering projects on time and budget. He moved to the London office in 1992 and by 1998 took over the operational responsibility for the London (and Epsom) office. With his unique understanding of the industry, Gordon ensures he and his team strive to successfully deliver each and every project, be it a small residential refurbishment to a multi-million-pound new build. Gordon has a broad range of experience and having supported the growth of the southern region offices with his creativity and strategic thinking and has successfully delivered projects across many sectors including Healthcare, Education, Defence, Commercial, Retail, Residential, Sports & Leisure. I have an "outside the box" thinking approach to challenges leaving no stone unturned in driving waste out of the design construction processes.

Justin Lees

With over 25 years' experience in building services consultancy, Justin is a Board Director with responsibility for our Plymouth office. Graduating from Bath University with an Honours degree in 1995, he gained extensive knowledge and broad experience of sustainable-thinking, working-practices and engineering-solutions having worked across Europe and New Zealand before joining Hulley & Kirkwood in 2008. Since establishing the Plymouth office he has built a strong team of experienced engineers with a breadth and depth of sector expertise supporting Hulley & Kirkwood as a leading M&E consultancy in the region. Justin also has a specialism in student accommodation and has developed a broad spectrum of associated clients including Universities as well as national and regional developers.

Michael O'Donnell

Michael is a Board Director and responsible for our Edinburgh Office. With over 33 years of industry experience, he has been Project Director for a number of major high-profile projects with extensive experience in all sectors of the Industry. Michael provides design leadership on low carbon / low energy design strategies along with the Hulley Eco team. Michael brings a pragmatic perspective on all aspects related to M&E issues with a pro-active and practical approach to the projects. Michael is well versed in working over long development timeframes and appreciates the importance of providing continuity of resource with a quality service to our clients. Graduating with an honours degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Strathclyde, Michael joined Hulley & Kirkwood in 1989 as a graduate engineer progressing through the business to Board Director, successfully delivering a sequence of major projects in a wide variety of sectors.

Nigel Yemm

Nigel has more than 39 years' experience within the building services industry, he is a member of the Board of Directors with responsibility for our Bristol office. Nigel is responsible for the day to day management of all aspects of the Bristol office delivering projects within the surrounding region including South Wales. He has a broad range of consultancy expertise as well as contracting experience prior to joining Hulley & Kirkwood in 1994. Nigel has a keen interest in the development of low carbon design with all projects. He takes an active role in the decision making process through project concept design stages in order to ensure that the final servicing strategy exploits all opportunities to save energy whilst delivering a comfortable and functional environment. Nigel is also responsible for our Quality Assurance and Environmental Management Systems operating across the company helping develop and lead consistent project delivery between all offices. I believe that a clear understanding of Client requirements, along with a focused view of current industry standards, available technology and project cost, quality and programme considerations is essential to the successful delivery of any project.

Peter Metcalf

Peter joined Hulley & Kirkwood in 1999 supporting the development of the Manchester office to its well-established presence in the region and being appointed to Manchester Director in 2013. Peter has over 30 years' experience in the Building Services industry where his career began in electrical installation contracting before moving to consulting engineering and has seen him working on projects within every sector of the built environment. Peter provides both design and construction consultancy in addition to project management roles for our clients and he continues to support our engineering staff with their project duties and deliverables sharing the knowledge and experience he has attained. Peter is determined to deliver a high-quality service to his clients and play an active supporting role to his design team counterparts.

Stephen McKinlay

Stephen has over 39 years' experience working within MEP consultancy and is jointly responsible for our Glasgow Office. Stephen joined the Board of Directors in 2007 and is currently part of the Executive Board, assisting with the development of the company's strategic and operational goals across the UK. Stephen also acts as lead Director for projects across the country and provides an enthusiastic, refreshing and proactive approach to problem solving on all MEP issues, which has resulted in a great deal of repeat business with key clients over the years. From an early stage in his H&K career, Stephen developed a keen interest in Exhibition and Stadia projects and has helped to grow and develop our business within these sectors, with considerable experience gained in the safety and control of the public within large spaces. Energy efficiency, the use of passive building design and the integration of low carbon renewable design solutions are important elements on each of Stephens projects. He takes an active role in concept design to ensure only viable solutions, which demonstrate clear value for money, are used to deliver comfortable and efficient building environments.

Wayne Shipley

Job Titles:

Wayne is a Mechanical Director with over 20 years' experience in building services consultancy. He joined the Epsom team as a Graduate Mechanical Engineer in 2004 and has progressed through the company to Mechanical Director in 2023. Wayne has a wealth of experience including leading and managing projects across the Education, Healthcare, Commercial and Residential sectors. He works closely with his team, coordinating resources for successful project delivery. Wayne also has an active role in providing sustainability and BREEAM advice to clients working alongside BREEAM Assessors and Low Carbon Consultants to enable ‘green' issues to be incorporated successfully into M&E designs from conception.
