Adam Sunderland

Andrew McCafferty

ARB registered in 1988, Andrew has over twenty nine years post qualification experience in private architectural practice in Scotland and North of England. Having joined Austin-Smith: Lord in October 2008, Andrew was promoted to Associate in January 2010, Director in 2014 and is currently Principal for the Glasgow studio. Andrew is versatile working in most sectors - commercial, retail, industrial, education, healthcare and transportation. He is experienced in a lead consultant role, coordinating design teams, committed to project delivery and has an excellent track record in both building refurbishment and new build. Andrew has lectured at the University of Strathclyde as part of the university's practice management curriculum and as part of APEAS is responsible for examining RIBA part 3 candidates for professional qualification.

Anna Blamire-Brown

Anna is a Certified European Passive House Designer and an environment-conscious designer with over a decade of experience in the residential, education, arts and hospitality sectors. Since joining Austin-Smith:Lord in 2019, she has worked on a wide range of new-build and refurbishment projects in the architectural team, as well as fulfilling demand for sustainability and Passivhaus consultancy services.

Carolyn Allison

Carolyn works with Austin-Smith:Lord to support the marketing function. Her role includes management and development of the Austin-Smith:Lord brand, website, social media content, PR, marketing collateral, and knowledge base. Carolyn works closely with the Marketing Partner and studio Marketing Coordinators to achieve this.

David Carr

David joined the practice as a Part II architectural assistant in 2021, having graduated from the University of Sheffield where he achieved a distinction. David has a keen interest in sustainable design, particularly where it pertains to the utilisation of low impact materials and building methods, as well as the wholesale reduction of carbon in a building's life cycle. His Master's dissertation explored achieving these reductions in Somerset by learning lessons from the past and transferring local vernacular knowledge into contemporary design and practices. He also takes a great interest in visualisation and the ability to experience a space in multiple media, whether it be with a photoshopped CGI or within a 3D VR experience.

JOHN RYLANDS

Kate Thomas

Having studied separately as both an Architect and as an Interior Designer, Kate is experienced and qualified in both fields. Rather than distinguish between interior and exterior design Kate prefers instead to consolidate and unite the two. The quality of Kate's interior architecture was recognised at Cardiff School of Management and Cardiff School of Art and Design which both received RIBA Awards. Kate is highly organised and an accomplished Project Director with an infectious enthusiasm and drive which ensures projects are progressed positively and effectively. She is adept at communicating, listening and understanding which is particularly valuable for stakeholder workshops and presentations. Kate is an important member of our senior management team and her wider practice roles include driving staff development and training alongside resource management. She is a key member of our practice-wide Education sector and Arts, Culture & Heritage sector groups

Martin Roe

As an Executive Board member with over 27 years of architectural experience, Martin combines key practice-wide leadership roles with pro-active involvement in projects, particularly those within the education and commercial sectors. His highly collaborative approach and experience has positively influenced the successful delivery of projects across a wide range of sectors for both public and private sector clients. Martin has further practice-wide responsibilities for Quality and Environmental Management, together with Health and Safety.

Mesha Annetts

Mesha is a passionate designer with strong creative abilities. She prides herself in having a positive attitude and work ethic. Working closely with our Project Directors & Project Architects on a multi-million pound education project, Mesha has experienced numerous stages of work from design development through to construction. She is currently studying for RIBA Part 3 recognition. Mesha has previous experience working with a small architectural practice in London, as well as a leading UK housing developer. Both allowed her to develop an extensive eye for detail and the ability to manage a broad range of responsibility.

Mike Austin-Smith

Mike Austin-Smith met in 1946 as they resumed architectural studies that had been interrupted by the war. Two years later they were married, and in 1949 JM Austin-Smith and Partner was founded. Later Mike Austin-Smith would cite how teamworking and esprit de corps were an integral part of his war experience with the Royal Horse Artillery (he was awarded the Military Cross), and how he had learned the meaning of professional responsibility the hard way. The ethos of teamwork and professional responsibility became engrained in the practice that bore his name, and have remained ever since. Mike Austin-Smith is President of the Architectural Association

Neil Alexander

Job Titles:

Neil joined Austin-Smith:Lord in 2008, progressing from a year out ‘part 1' student of the Mackintosh School of Architecture to a qualified architect. He makes a strong contribution to the Glasgow Studio, running a number of large scale projects. Neil has gained significant experience in the fields of social housing, transportation and education through various developments in and around the West of Scotland, Northern England, South Wales and the Middle East. Working on both design & build and traditionally procured contracts, Neil has gained a rounded knowledge of sector requirements, varied construction techniques and design standards utilising drawn, CAD and BIM software packages to progress design and construction information.

Tim Young

Tim is a highly respected designer, creating elegant and inspiring architectural solutions with a high degree of pragmatism. Whilst possessing a broad range of experience, Tim has developed specialist expertise in the Further and Higher Education sectors. His design flair has been recognised through three RIBA Awards; for his Cardiff School of Management at Cardiff Metropolitan University in 2011, for Guildford ‘G-Live' Concert venue in 2012, and for the Cardiff School of Art and Design in 2014. He has a studio-wide role in championing design quality. Tim became a Director of Austin-Smith:Lord in 2016.

Tom Barker

Job Titles:

Tom joined the Bristol studio shortly after it was founded in 2016. Since then he has been focussed on building the reputation of the Bristol Studio through design quality and developing regional relationships. Tom has continued on to become the Studio Leader in Bristol Studio responsible for promoting a positive Design Studio Culture and continuing the work of developing business relationships in the South West. Tom has a particular interest in environmental and social impacts of architecture. Key to this is the narrative architecture can have in a community, from project conception to long term use of the building. In recent years Tom has been active in Education, Arts and Culture, Civic and Residential sectors. Tom is an excellent and confident communicator in large project teams, and within community engagement. He is experienced in leading and delivering BIM Level 2 projects and implementing the 3D modelling for coordination, and public engagement. He thoroughly enjoys engaging with clients, stakeholders and the design teams and values good relationships and communication as the key to successful projects.
